Earlier this week, the Wildlife Land Fund Ltd hosted team members from the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) at the Wildlife Queensland Head Office for the official handing over of the certificate that lists Weranga Scarps Nature Reserve as Australia’s first OECM Conserved Area.

We’d like to thank the DETSI team for coming along for a short ceremony to celebrate this milestone in our nation’s efforts to secure 30% of Australia’s landmass as protected or conserved areas by 2030.

Weranga Scarps holds a special place in our hearts, and we couldn’t be more pleased to see it inscribed so momentously in the history of conservation in this country. We know that the late Wayne Lawler, who bequeathed the property to WLFL, would have been incredibly proud to see his beloved Weranga Scarps honoured in this way and to know that a formal instrument is now in place to dedicate it to the preservation of Queensland's wildlife forever more, as well as to contribute to global biodiversity goals.

To get involved with the Wildlife Land Fund Ltd, or to consider leaving a similar legacy yourself, please visit our page and consider becoming a member (just $25 a year) or donating to the Fund. With your ongoing support, we can continue to secure more land for wildlife throughout the state. https://www.wildfund.org

🎉 Big news this World Nature Conservation Day (28 July)! 🌿

We’re thrilled to announce that the Wildlife Land Fund Ltd’s Weranga Scarps Nature Reserve is now officially Australia’s first OECM Conserved Area – a huge win for wildlife and wild places! 🐾

This 48-hectare gem in Queensland’s Western Downs is packed with biodiversity and is currently participating in research to help us better understand the western range of the endangered spotted-tailed quoll alongside founding organisation Wildlife Queensland's Quoll Seekers Network.

Much of Weranga Scarps was bequeathed to the Wildlife Land Fund by the late conservation photographer Wayne Lawler, and with help from supporters at Wildlife Queensland, an adjacent plot was purchased and appended to the site in 2021 to strengthen habitat resilience and connectivity.💚

“Wildlife Land Fund is excited to work with the Queensland Government and other landholders across the state to identify and recognise additional conserved areas under the OECM framework,” said Wildlife Land Fund President, Adrian Caneris. “Our vision is to contribute to an ecologically sustainable future for people and wildlife by conserving Queensland’s natural environment.”

Weranga Scarps Nature Reserve will be protected in perpetuity for wildlife, and we hope to soon see more Conserved Areas as the Crisafulli government invests $414,000 over two years (2024–25 and 2025–26) in a pilot program to implement the national OECM framework across the state.🌏
