Update: Sadly I've just now been informed that due to unforeseen setbacks with the state approvals process the current install date for our Shellfish regeneration site has to be delayed. Updates to come. Please bear with us while we get this sorted and re-launch the project.
This is a larger issue temporarily effecting many ozfish projects across the state, that has unfortunately taken our project as collateral.
Thankyou to all who showed interest and support. We will be striving to get this project over the line ASAP.
Apologies,
Mark
[POSTPONED] Official Call for Volunteers.
Help Build Living Oyster Habitat in Hervey Bay
OzFish Unlimited and the Hervey Bay Chapter are looking for volunteers to help install Quilted Oyster Doonas (QODs) at Urangan on Sunday, 14 June.
QODs are shell-filled stainless steel habitat units designed to retrofit rock walls and create living shellfish habitat that supports oysters, fish, crabs, and other marine life.
On the day we will:
Carry and position QOD units
Drill and secure the units to the rock wall
Undertake baseline quadrat and habitat surveys
Talk all things shellfish reef restoration
Date: Sunday 14 June
Time: 11:00 am to approximately 2:00 pm
Location: Urangan area, Hervey Bay
Meeting point: Please park legally and safely near Urangan Fisheries, 860 Boat Harbour Drive, Urangan
What to bring:
Hat
Water
Enclosed shoes with a good grip
Long pants
Long-sleeved shirt
Sunscreen
Everyone is welcome to come along and learn more about the project. We only need around 8 active helpers for the deployment itself, with OzFish members getting priority for hands-on activities.
We are also keen to talk with anyone interested in helping establish a shell recycling hub in the Hervey Bay region to support future restoration projects.
Please RSVP ASAP so we can plan the day.
Email [email protected] or text or call 0450955385 with your details and any questions.
Huge thanks to Hervey Bay Chapter and all the local volunteers helping grow shellfish restoration in the region.
