WORKING TOGETHER.. We encourage your input as we need to draw on the strengths of all to make a holistic and unified philosophy in defence of the K'gari dingoes (Canis Dingo )...
Dingoes are Australia's largest mammalian predator and have been in Australia for anywhere up to 18,000 years. They are declared an indigenous species and classed as native wildlife. Sections 17 and 62 of the Act also provide for the legal protection of the dingo as a natural resource in protected areas such as World Heritage listed Fraser Island. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE K'GARI DINGO.
1. As Top Order predator on the Island, the dingo is vital in maintaining the health and balance of this fragile ecosystem.
2. The Fraser Island dingo adds to the value of the Island as a major international tourist attraction, it is one of few places where visitors may get the chance to observe a dingo in its natural habitat.
3. The Fraser Island dingo is also genetically unique because of its isolation from the mainland, and therefore we have an obligation to ensure that the genetic integrity of the population is preserved. The Butchulla people are the Traditional Owners of K'gari (Fraser Island) and have been resident for at least 5000 years, archaeological evidence suggests occupation could possibly be up to 50,000 years. Prior to European settlement the K'gari dingo lived in harmony with the Butchulla and were an intrinsic part of camp life, they held a significant place in their spiritual and cultural practices. Help with gathering all the facts and evidence regarding their current status on K'gari (Fraser Island.) Welcome and thanks to all our member's for your support and contribution's. Please keep posts relevant to K'gari. The Fraser Island Dingo Conservation and Risk Management Strategy sets out an overarching framework for the management of K'gari dingoes. SFID's objective is to monitor the ongoing implementation of the Strategy to ensure 'best practice' regarding dingo management. With tourism numbers continually rising, it is imperative we educate our visitors. WE HAVE PEOPLE PROBLEMS NOT DINGO PROBLEMS
Appropriate response when or IF you encounter a dingo…. DO NOT FEED or ENCOURAGE....it could be a death sentence for our dingo. DON’T BE FRIGHTENED…STAY CALM…DON’T RUN! We repeat NEVER RUN! ; remain quiet and watch, stay alert! STAND STILL…
DO NOT WAVE YOUR ARMS AROUND. CHILDREN RAISE YOUR ARMS HIGH AND STILL AND STAY CLOSE TO YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIANS (arms length)…the dingo will become uninterested and simply move on…or if required...carefully glance back and SLOWLY back away. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE and enjoy the privilege of observing them in a wild and natural environment. SFID Inc

EASTER 2026

The holiday season is always a concern when it comes to dingo/visitor interactions and Easter coincides with the dingo breeding season when young animals are out and about looking for mates. This heightens the possibility of an incident occurring. Each year we remind people to obey the rules, stay vigilant and stay away from the wildlife.

Information regarding dingo safety is available in brochures, video's, online and signage. FAMILIES with children preferably stay in fenced areas..
KEEP children within arms reach at all times.
DON'T harass the animals i.e. throw sand, sticks or chase them.
DON'T encourage or feed the dingoes or any wildlife.
DON'T get out of your vehicle, observe from a distance.

We hope that tourists respect the land, the culture and the wildlife, it is this unique environment that makes K'gari such a special place to visit. Consider it a privilege if you are fortunate to see a dingo but always give them their space.
We expect extra ranger patrols over the holidays. We encourage those who visit to report anyone acting inappropriately. Phone 07 4127 9150 or email [email protected] as soon as possible.
Protecting the natural integrity and native wildlife of K'gari is everyone's responsibility.
HAPPY EASTER..

(Blue tag) was collared to monitor his behaviour after his family group was killed. The collar provides regular updates regarding his movements in order to help in management decisions, prevent negative encounters with tourists and enable more public education.

COLLAR STATS.

The (GPS) collars are designed to fix locations accurately and remotely.

They include a release mechanism which which can be pre-set to release on a required date or remotely.

The collars are also fitted with VHF transmitters to assist monitoring and retrieval of the collars.

The collars are pre-set to record an animal position every two hours, depending on environmental conditions and availability of satellites. Batteries expected to last approx. 8 months.

The total weight of the collars, including battery and automatic release mechanism, is approximately 500g, which is slightly more than 3% of the weight of a 15 kg dingo.

There are 4 dingoes remaining from the group on the beach. One young animal has been collared , this does not mean he is dangerous, he has been displaced and lost most of his family and now has to contend with a tracking collar. Just give him space to find his place.

This is basically what the coroner said in the preliminary report. The only one's who know exactly what happened are Piper and the dingoes, who are all dead.. A very sad and distressing incident that, tragically, could have been avoided.

DINGO PUP BEING HARASSED ON K'GARI.
This is what we have to contend with..these idiots are sending mixed messages to the pup, on the one hand they are encouraging it and then kick sand. It's obvious that people are the problem not the animals.

The decision to euthanase these dingoes was not based on science or research but a political decision without proper consideration or consultation.

Dingoes have been culled on K'gari following the tragic death of Canadian backpacker Piper James. Australian experts respond below.

SFID MEDIA STATEMENT. 26 Jan 2026
TRAGEDY ON K'GARI.
A terrible tragedy occurred on K'gari (Fraser Island) recently. A young womans body was discovered on the beach near the Maheno. Piper James was a 19 year old from Canada on a trip of
a lifetime. She had been living and working on the Island for 6 weeks.
The teenager went for an early morning swim and never returned. Her body was discovered by passing fishermen. Since then there have been many theories and much conjecture circulating on
social media, but the only one that counts is the findings of the Coroner.
Initial autopsy results have revealed Piper James had water in her lungs consistent with drowning and injuries consistent with dingo bites, authorities are still unsure how she died and further
testing is being carried out, but the Premier, David Crisafulli, and the Minister for the Environment, Andrew Powell, are not interested in waiting for the facts and have ordered that all dingoes on the
beach that morning be destroyed. We are aware that at least 6 have already been killed.
When the present government came to power the first thing they did was reject a Sustainable Visitor Capacity and Management Study. The next was to dismiss a Strategic Plan by the World
Heritage Advisory Committee to address threats identified in the IUCN World Heritage Outlook Report.
Instead of addressing the issues at hand the government has now taken the easy and appalling action of directing QPWS to euthanize the dingoes and subsequently deny any culpability. Whilst
our iconic K'gari wongari (dingoes) are being euthanased the Minister, Andrew Powell, made it very clear that tourism is his and the Premier's priority. “K’gari, Fraser Island, remains open, and
we are supporting our tourism operators as they continue to showcase the Fraser Coast. “
This was a political decision made without consultation. Many people are shocked and dismayed at this course of action. If you agree you can share your thoughts with the government.

An overseas perspective. We will be releasing a statement in the morning about the decision by government to kill the dingoes.

The sun was still low on the horizon when 19-year-old Piper James walked toward the Pacific Ocean for a morning swim on an island whose name in the local language means “paradise.”

A 3 legged dingo was recently euthanased on K'gari. The injury was due to fishing line entanglement and either the young animal chewed the leg or it fell off due to lack of blood supply. Despite the injury she was actually coping and was filmed running with her companions. When rangers eventually caught her they decided the best option was to euthanase. We know of a 3 legged wolf in Yellowstone called 'Tripod' that lived to successfully raise pups but we will not know if this dingo could also have survived. Was it the most humane thing to do or was it a missed opportunity to further understand dingo dynamics?
