SIGNIFICANCE OF THE K'GARI DINGO.
1. As Top Order predator on the Island, the dingo is vital in maintaining the health and balance of this fragile ecosystem.
2. The Fraser Island dingo adds to the value of the Island as a major international tourist attraction, it is one of few places where visitors may get the chance to observe a dingo in its natural habitat.
3. The Fraser Island dingo is also genetically unique because of its isolation from the mainland, and therefore we have an obligation to ensure that the genetic integrity of the population is preserved. The Butchulla people are the Traditional Owners of K'gari (Fraser Island) and have been resident for at least 5000 years, archaeological evidence suggests occupation could possibly be up to 50,000 years. Appropriate response when or IF you encounter a dingo…. DO NOT FEED or ENCOURAGE....it could be a death sentence for our dingo. DON’T BE FRIGHTENED…STAY CALM…DON’T RUN! We repeat NEVER RUN! ; remain quiet and watch, stay alert! STAND STILL…
DO NOT WAVE YOUR ARMS AROUND. CHILDREN RAISE YOUR ARMS HIGH AND STILL AND STAY CLOSE TO YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIANS (arms length)…the dingo will become uninterested and simply move on…or if required...carefully glance back and SLOWLY back away. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE and enjoy the privilege of observing them in a wild and natural environment. SFID Inc
