Hervey Bay City Musicians is a community based organisation established for the purpose of providing its members with the opportunity to enjoy playing music.

HBCM is run by volunteers, who manage and support the various groups under our umbrella. This includes a Concert Band, String Ensemble, Rock Ensemble. Other groups are formed as occasions arise – such as to accompany a visiting concert performer - or as musicians request it. HBCM itself is not involved in the direct tutoring of students on their instruments; rather, it aims to improve technical an

d musicianship skills through rehearsal, and performance. Within any particular group, there will be a range of technical and musicianship skills; all are equally encouraged to always play at their best. Repertoire, and its degree of difficulty, is chosen by the conductor to reflect the range of skills and interests within the group; conductors will also consciously be seeking a particular sound and style to create an appealing character and personality for their group.

Statement Of Purpose

Hervey Bay City Musicians is a community based organisation established for the purpose of providing its members with the opportunity to enjoy playing music.

We support the general Hervey Bay community by performing at a variety of arts events, retirement villages, schools and official occasions.

HBCM is run by volunteers, who manage and support the various groups under our umbrella. This includes a Concert Band, String Ensemble, Youth Choir and Big Band. Other groups are formed as occasions arise – such as to accompany a visiting concert performer -- or as musicians request it.

HBCM itself is not involved in the direct tutoring of students on their instruments; rather, it aims to improve technical and musicianship skills through rehearsal, and performance. Hervey Bay City Musicians takes pride in encouraging school students to participate in our groups.

This in no way implies that we are here to replace school bands and ensembles.

Rather, HBCM aims to enrich the musical experience of our members through playing in a community group, with like-minded people of all ages and experiences, and performing a wide ranging repertoire.

As a collection of music-loving individuals drawn from the community, we are responsible to ourselves to help our organisation run smoothly and successfully, and to flourish.

It is in our own interests that we contribute to the smooth functioning of our groups and rehearsals, and value the regard in which our groups are held.

As a member of our organisation:

we should be on-time, appropriately equipped and mentally prepared for the commitment ahead (be it rehearsal or performance);

we should regard our co-members positively, and with encouragement; interact with our conductors with respect; and remember that members of our management committee are ordinary members who have volunteered to oversee our organisation;

we should feel entitled to make suggestions at an appropriate time about the well-being of the band, organisation or future plans (just not in the middle of a rehearsal);

we should inform our group’s conductor in advance if we will be absent from a rehearsal or performance; or send a message if unavailable at the last minute;

we should always be aware of the impact of our behaviour on a rehearsal: playing or talking out of turn may disrupt the conductor’s focus and intentions. Listen and follow directions;

we should keep in mind that we have come together because we enjoy making music; if it becomes unenjoyable, the organisation will die.
