Council sets long-term direction for cemetery services...
Fraser Coast Regional Council has endorsed a long-term, region-wide approach to planning cemetery and memorial services to meet the needs of a growing community.
At its meeting today (Wednesday 22 April 2026), Council resolved to begin work on a Fraser Coast Community Facilities Strategy to guide future planning for key community infrastructure, including cemetery services.
Communities spokesperson Cr. Michelle Govers said the decision marks an important step in planning for the future.
“This is about taking a considered, long-term approach to how we provide cemetery and memorial services across the Fraser Coast as part of broader planning for community facilities,” she said.
“We know these are deeply personal decisions for families, and it’s important we plan in a way that is respectful, accessible and sustainable, while also balancing community needs with long-term financial responsibility.”
Council’s decision follows detailed assessment and community engagement, which explored how existing cemeteries are used, the role of alternative memorial options, and how services can best meet future demand.
Rather than focusing on a single outcome, Council will take a broader strategic approach, examining how cemetery services can be planned and delivered across the region over time.
This includes opportunities to extend the life of existing facilities and to investigate potential future sites for broader community purposes, including cemeteries.
Cr Govers said this approach reflects both the complexity of the issue and the community's input.
“We heard that people value having access to appropriate and meaningful places of remembrance, but also that affordability, sustainability and choice are critical,” she said.
“Community feedback showed strong support for a range of options—from traditional burial through to natural burials, memorial gardens and ashes interment—reflecting changing preferences and expectations.”
Council will now consider funding for the development of the Community Facilities Strategy as part of upcoming budget deliberations, with further work to explore practical options and next steps.
“This is about making sure we have a clear, sustainable plan in place for the future,” Cr Govers said.
“We’re taking the time to get this right so our community continues to have access to respectful and appropriate services for generations to come.”
