🏘️ Gliders get five star upgrade at Henty

Eastern Riverina Landcare is committed to tackling the housing crisis - the squirrel glider housing crisis, that is.

For almost 20 years the group has worked on providing nest boxes for squirrel gliders in a bushland corridor near Henty and the happy little residents can now go five star with the addition of several more boxes in the latest heat and cold resistant design. The boxes and their installation was funded by Riverina LLS through its endangered species program.

This builds on the work of Landcare quiet achiever the late Mark Janetzki who spent hundreds of hours building, installing and monitoring the nest boxes.

An inspection of the established boxes at the same time as the installation revealed several occupied boxes and many recently visited.

The squirrel glider is a threatened species and it traditionally makes its home in tree hollows. By installing shelters, the gliders can travel safely between habitats and numbers generally increase due to safer breeding sites.

🌳 Junior Landcare Warriors 🌳
These two young members of our group who live at The Rock deserve a round of applause. Inspired by our AGM presentation on the impact of the invasive bird, the Indian myna, they’ve busked and sold informative fridge magnets to raise enough money to buy our group two myna humane traps to share around.
Great work kids and Indian Mynas of the Eastern Riverina … look out! ❌
If you want to deal with the invasive mynas (they bully native birds away and destroy eggs) get in touch with us 👍

Join us for a walk through an important biodiversity corridor in the Bowna district - through one of the best White box woodland remnants and down to the foreshores of Lake Hume at the Cumberoona TSR.
