It is with a saddened heart that we share the passing of Max, one of our beloved volunteer tutors, last Sunday.

Max was born in Sri Lanka in 1949. He went to the UK to become psychiatric nurse, before migrating to Australia in 1981.

In 2009 he become a primary school teacher. Max was incredibly generous and passionate about supporting Aboriginal children and newly arrived migrants and refugees.
After Covid, he decided to do volunteering work, joining Himilo in 2022. Max looked forward to returning to Himilo even on the last few weeks and days of his life.

Max was a valued member of our community who generously shared his time, knowledge, and kindness with those he tutored. He loved to travel and see the world. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Max’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

May he rest in peace. 🕊️

Our recent Youth Wellbeing program combined evidence-based strategies with active, community-driven experiences to support overall wellbeing. Participants engaged in practical sessions on stress management and public speaking to build confidence, alongside other activities designed to foster social connection and physical health.

Thank you Kate Thwaites MP for your o going support. With your support we have been able to achieve better employment and education outcomes for our community members. We look forward to working with you to achieve better social and economic outcomes for our participants.

So pleased to be back with the team at Himilo Community Connect to share the good news – a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will provide $50,000 for Himilo to run the Bridges Project.

Led by young people, the project will involve inclusive sports, interfaith learning, and cultural celebration activities that bring youth and families together.

Himilo does incredible work every day for the 3081 Somali community and I can’t wait to come back and hear about the project’s success.
