This Whistling Kite seems to be conducting it’s own survey of Karkarook Park!
The details for the next FoKP survey are:
Date: Sunday 19th April
Time: 8:30am - 11:30am
Location: Dragonfly/informational centre
RSVP: Rhiannon: [email protected]
In the March survey we recorded a total of 42 species. There was quite the excitement when a Whistling Kite circled the skies above the park. We also spotted a Brown Falcon. A good day for raptors! Other than some impressive big birds we also spotted a White-browed Scrubwren, a smaller more subtle songbird but a beauty nonetheless. It's been a while since one was spotted in the park!

Our next working bee is tomorrow - Saturday 11 April, starting at 9 am.
We’re planning a Walkabout Working Bee with trees ready to plant at specific spots around the park and some path maintenance along the way, also some TLC of recent plantings at the sheoak carpark.

If you’re planning to attend Saturday’s working bee, please register the fact on ParkConnect (preferred) or just turn up and sign the attendance sheet
All welcome!

Working Bee – Saturday 28th March, starting at 9 am.

What's Planned?
We have some native grass seed for sowing so there will be some action in the propagation area. Our tool shed will be tidied up, and there will be plants in the nursery and sheoak gardens that need some care.
Tea / Coffee and biscuits are on at 11:30am (or earlier according to the popular demand!)

If you’re planning to attend Saturday’s working bee, please register the fact on ParkConnect (preferred) or just turn up and sign the attendance sheet.

Our latest plans for this coming activity are on our web site and will be updated as needed.

Working bee this Saturday!
Saturday 14 March from 9 am - noon.
At the Compound (near the park exit).
Come join us! New faces are always most welcome 🙂
In addition to nursery attention, we will also be doing a walk through the park and attending to litter, watering and other areas requiring attention, such as build up of soil on the walking path, and tree stake attention.
Pictured is a photo of our most recent large scaled tree planted area on the north side of the park.

In February's survey a total of 40 species were spotted. The Great Crested Grebes are still on the lake which is nice to see, and the Black Swan cygnets are growing big and strong. With gums beginning to flower in the area we also saw Musk Lorikeets noisily gathering near the dragonfly platform. A White-faced Heron was spotted elegantly wading in the retarding basins, and to much excitement of our group a Swamp Harrier flew over causing a commotion with the other birds!

Hope to see you at the next one!

We had a great start to the year in January's survey with 44 species recorded. The Black Swan cygnets are growing up so fast, and are starting to lose their fluffy down feathers.

The Great Crested Grebe is still lounging around the lake, hopefully to stay long term!

We also heard Laughing Kookaburra which is a species not usually recorded at Karkarook (someone must have told a particularly good joke!).

Between the merriment of Christmas, I completed a survey to make up for the one that was cancelled in December. I saw a total of 38 species, including the Latham's snipe which was in the bigger of the retarding ponds, the Black Swans with their cute and fast growing cygnets, A Great Crested Grebe on the lake, the two Tawny Frogmouth huddled together and some Common Bronzewing.

Hope to see you Sunday!

What better way to spend the summer than fishing with friends or family at Karkarook Park.

However, don't forget, you need a fishing licence to fish the lake if you are over 18 or younger than 70

Your fishing licence fees go straight back into even better fishing, with 20 new projects funded across the state last year, including Karkarook Park.

For Karkarook, your fishing licence fees have helped fund a $45,000 upgrade to the control panel for the submersible bore pump at Karkarook Lake.

Parks Victoria will upgrade the control panel for the submersible bore pump which maintains water levels in this popular recreational fishery and supports healthy fish habitat for stocked species such a rainbow trout and Murray cod.

Thanks to your fishing licence fees, we will hopefully start to see the water levels in the lake rise this year.
