KEVIN STOKES AWARDED MEDAL OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA

Today we celebrate an extraordinary achievement. Congratulations to Kevin Stokes, awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for outstanding service to conservation and the environment.

As a founding father of the Botanic Gardens and our longest serving volunteer, Kevin has dedicated over four decades to environmental stewardship, community education, and hands on conservation work.

His leadership has been recognised through numerous honours, including Hunter Volunteer of the Year, Senior Volunteer of the Year, and the prestigious Freedom of Port Stephens.

Today, Kevin remains an active board member and the passionate curator of our iconic Grevillea Garden, ensuring its beauty and biodiversity continue to flourish.

This national recognition is a testament to Kevin’s lifetime of service.

THANK YOU TO KATE WASHINGTON

Our volunteer community received wonderful recognition in State Parliament this week, with popular Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington delivering a heartfelt tribute to the outstanding work happening at the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens.

Kate’s speech highlighted the Gardens as one of our region’s most valued natural assets —the Hunter’s horticultural heaven.

Kate acknowledged the tireless efforts of staff, volunteers, and supporters who maintain the Gardens’ diverse collections and ensure they remain a welcoming space for families, schools, researchers, and visitors.

We extend our appreciation to Kate for shining a spotlight on the Gardens in our 40th Anniversary Year and for celebrating the people who make them flourish.
