๐Ÿ’šHELENA RIVER APPEAL ๐Ÿ’š

The Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) corridor is a crucial connection for wildlife seeking safe passage through our busy suburbs, from black cockatoos following safe flying routes to the snake necked turtles who swim in the waters and nest close to the riverbank.

Weโ€™ve been caretakers of this precious waterway for almost 40 years, planting trees, shrubs and sedges along its banks to restore water quality and provide habitat for wildlife.

๐Ÿ’š In 2026, we will be planting 6,500 native trees and plants along the Mandoon Bilya, and we need your help.

๐ŸŒฑ$90 helps us grow 30 native sedges, providing habitat for aquatic wildlife
๐ŸคŽ$150 helps us build quenda hotels, providing shelter for native bandicoots
๐Ÿ’ง$400 helps us run nature care days, installing swales to slow the water flow and protect the riverbanks from erosion

With your help, we can protect and restore this unique river corridor for future generations to enjoy.

Last weekend, with the help of around 200 volunteers and our friends from Activate Tree Planting, we kick started our 2026 planting season with 37,680 seedlings at a property just out of the town of Wagin in the Wheatbelt.

๐Ÿ’šAll the healthy tube-stock plants were grown with love by the dedicated volunteers in our community nursery. Everyone worked together to carefully plant the huge number of plants in incredibly good time, finishing a full day earlier than expected.

๐Ÿ’šLike clockwork, the rain seemed to come either side of planting sessions, and the nice soft mounded rows of topsoil prepared by the landholder made for much easier planting. This project marks the start of our work to tackle the increasing salinity of the area and restore biodiversity and ecosystem health to this sector of the Blackwood River Catchment.

๐Ÿ’šAs these trees, shrubs, sedges and grasses grow, a diverse mosaic of York Gum, Sheoak and Melaleuca woodlands will contribute to lowering the water table and triggering the steady desalinisation of the soil, while also providing habitat for local wildlife.

Huge thanks to our volunteers and supporters who make this work possible ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘๐ŸขSnake necked turtle hatchlings๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿข In October last year, our Restoration Manager, Doug Laurie, was privileged to witness a snake necked turtle mama lay her eggs in the grounds of Trillion Trees. Fast forward almost 9 months and the babies have started to hatch! Check out this amazing clip captured by our volunteer coordinator, Sophia Dunning ๐Ÿ‘

We protected the mama turtleโ€™s nest and monitored it with cameras, and finally the change in the weather last weekend seemed to trigger these babies into action.

There is very little research published about the hatchlingโ€™s behaviour but scientists know they are at great risk from the threat of predation and urbanization. This nest is only a few hundred metres along the Helena River from the proposed site of the huge Hazelmere Data Centre, which the local community fought so hard to get withdrawn last month.

Weโ€™ve seen four hatchlings emerge so far, and there could be as many as 24 eggs in this underground nest! The nest is close to our Mandoon Bilya Restoration Project on the banks of the Helena River.

Welcome to Makuru!
๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™
Monday 1st June marks the beginning of the new season of Makuru for the Noongar people of South Western Australia.

Makuru runs from June-July. In Makuru, the wind is coming from the coast, the wet season is upon us, and its time to stay put inland and wait for the rivers and lakes to fill.

Makuru is associated with the colour blue, and heralds the arrival of the blue/purple flowers of the Patersonia occidentalis (Komma or Purple Flag Iris) and Dianella revoluta (Mangard or Flax Lily).

Birds migrate and animals pair up ahead of the breeding season.

What signs of Makuru can you see where you are? ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŒณ2026 PLANTING SEASON IS LIVE! We are kicking off our 2026 planting season in Wagin this weekend with our largest event of the year - 40,000 native plants, 200+ people and a whole weekend of festival fun.

Working in partnership with our old friends from Activate Tree Planting, together we're delivering a three day festival of tree planting, good food and great music.

The Activate Tree Planting crew combine music, art, food, indigenous culture and community together into unique events that repair and revegetate our landscape.

The 2026 Activate Tree Planting Festival will take place at a private property in Wagin.

Situated in close proximity to a large system of salt lakes, this Wagin planting site has become highly salt-affected with remnant stands of Eucalyptus loxophleba (York Gum), Allocasuarina fraseriana (Sheoak) and Hakea sp. steadily being lost to samphire and weeds. The history of the site is largely unknown by the current landowners, Paul and Fran, though it was likely cleared for cropping at some stage.

In 2026 the species list incorporates a biodiverse range of native trees and plants including Casuarina obesa, Juncus pallidus and Enchylaena tomentosa.

Huge and grateful thanks to all the volunteers planting trees this weekend. Tickets sold out in record time again, and we know its going to be a very special event. Watch this space for more updates!

Huge thanks to everyone who has supported our Helena River Appeal since we launched just over a week ago. Your support means the world to us!

The Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) is exceptional ephemeral (seasonal) waterway that weaves its way through the landscape from its origins in the Mundaring State Forest, down through the Perth Hills to its climax, joining the Swan River near Guildford.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’› HAPPY WORLD BEE DAY! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

World Bee Day 2026 is an opportunity to highlight the vital role bees play in promoting biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem health. Bees are keystone species, meaning they play a pivotal role in preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health. Without bees, many ecosystems would be altered or cease to exist.

Native bees have co-evolved with Australiaโ€™s unique native flora over thousands of years. If bees disappear, so would a lot of the biodiversity they help sustain.

There are more than 20,000 species of bee that exist across the world and Australia is home to more than 2,000 native bee species.

Some plants are strongly preferred by native bees, including native peas and daisies, eucalyptus, banksia, acacia and bursaria species.

Native bee populations are in decline, threatened by habitat loss, disease and the use of pesticides in gardens and agriculture. Raising awareness of the importance of bees as part of healthy ecosystems is an important way of protecting them ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’šSnake necked turtles in the Helena River ๐Ÿ’š

Coal Dam Park in Woodbridge, is the gold standard in wetland habitats for freshwater turtle populations. Located just a few hundred metres from Trillion Trees, on the opposite side of the Helena River (Mandoon Bilya), Coal Dam Park is a haven for the snake necked turtles (Chelodina oblonga).

During early autumn, snake necked turtles can be seen at Coal Dam Park engaging in mating rituals, including males pursuing females, gentle nose-touching and attempts to clasp onto the femalesโ€™ shells. The turtles can also be observed basking on the timbers in the centre of the lake, which used to form part of a railway bridge.

From April onwards, baby snake-necked turtles will also be emerging from their nests and making their way to the water. In October last year, Trillion Trees staff observed a snake necked turtle laying eggs in the grounds of Trillion Trees. The nesting site is currently being monitored with wildlife cameras as we await the hatching of tiny turtles!

Snake necked turtles are the only native freshwater turtle species found throughout metropolitan and suburban Perth. They have an important role to play in wetland and river health and they are considered to be the top predator in the underwater food chain. The natural turtle diet includes frogs, fish and macroinvertebrates. Turtle hatchlings may also eat aquatic plants as well as midge and mosquito larvae.

The Helena River corridor provides important nesting habitat for snake necked turtles, a short distance from the water. Citizen scientists are encouraged to log turtle observations and nesting behaviour via TurtleSat website to enable researchers to build up a better picture of population characteristics and breeding behaviours.

Our Helena River Appeal is raising funds to protect and enhance snake necked turtle habitat along the Helena River ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ‘COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN SUCCESS ๐Ÿ‘

On Friday 15 May, the City of Swan and the Development Assessment Panel (DAP) formally confirmed that plans for a huge data centre on the Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) in Hazelmere had been withdrawn.

Community groups came together to advocate for this outcome: 1,829 community objections were received against the proposal, and a large community rally was held in Midland in April, attended by more than 120 people. Thank you all!

The Trillion Trees community is delighted that the application has been withdrawn - a great result for the environment and the community.

Hyper scale data centres that create noise, air and water pollution do not belong on the banks of a culturally significant river, near residential properties or adjacent to a primary school. This development went against the intent of the zoning in this rural residential pocket of Hazelmere, and would have destroyed the environment and the amenity for local residents and surrounding land users, including Trillion Trees.

Changes to planning frameworks are urgently needed in WA to ensure the environment and local communities are not adversely impacted by development. Data centres present their own unique environmental issues and new guard rails are urgently needed to guide rapid development in this sector.

Trees must be considered as critical infrastructure which have a key role as part of liveable cities. The role of canopy cover from large trees must be valued and protected in our warming climate. Large scale total land clearance is destroying amenity for local residents, and habitat for wildlife while heating our suburbs at an alarming rate. Our vision is for a world where everyone appreciates the value of trees.

๐Ÿ’šHELENA RIVER APPEAL

The Trillion Trees team have been custodians of the Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) for more than 40 years, working to restore the riverbanks to enhance this precious wildlife habitat that is home to dozens of different bird species, plus snake neck turtles, quenda and more.

This winter we will be planting 6500 trees, shrubs and sedges along the waters edge - and we need your help.

The Helena River Appeal is live HERE: https://chuffed.org/project/helena-river-appeal

Even though our campaign to protect the Helena River from the development of a huge data centre has been a success, our work to heal this landscape must continue.

We did it!

We are thrilled to confirm the news that the application for the proposed hyperscale data centre close to Trillion Trees has been withdrawn.

โ€ผ๏ธHAZELMERE DATA CENTRE DECISION DATE โ€ผ๏ธ

The Metro Outer Development Assessment Panel (MODAP) has set the date for the hearing which will make a determination on Greensquare DC's proposal for a supersize data centre in Hazelmere.

On Tuesday 19 May 2026 (9.30am) a five person panel will consider the development application at the City of Swan Council Chambers in Midland. The MODAP hearing is open to the public and will also be available to view online via a livestream.

Trillion Trees continues to oppose this development, which will be just 200m from our community nursery and Mandoon Bilya Restoration Project. We have real and serious concerns about the impact of a development of this scale in this location - adjacent to a primary school, a river and a wetland.

โ€ผ๏ธThe City of Swan received 1829 submissions from community members objecting to the Hazelmere data centre proposal. It is understood this number of objections is a record for any community consultation about a development application in the shire. Thank you to everyone in our community who made a submission. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ‘120 people also attended a community rally opposing the development in Midland in 22 April.

The community's concerns are serious and wide ranging:

โ€ผ๏ธNoise from 24/7 cooling systems and back up diesel generators
โ€ผ๏ธScale of the development in a rural residential setting (220m long x 24m high plus exhaust stacks)
โ€ผ๏ธContravenes the intent of the zoning (Special Use Zone) and the Hazelmere Enterprise Area Structure Plan (HEASP)
โ€ผ๏ธSignificant impacts on the neighbouring school community as an existing sensitive land user including noise, pollution, traffic, safety, amenity and bushfire risk
โ€ผ๏ธRisks of permanent environmental damage to the adjacent Helena River and conservation category wetland during construction and operation
โ€ผ๏ธClassification of a data centre as a "warehouse" in the absence of proper category for this emerging land use
โ€ผ๏ธImpacts to Aboriginal heritage sites - the Mandoon Bilya is a culturally significant river and there are also registered Aboriginal heritage sites on the land where the data centre could be built
โ€ผ๏ธImpacts on the amenity of local residents and businesses
โ€ผ๏ธUrban heat island impacts of a large building, which requires extensive clearance of canopy trees and will expel heat from cooling systems against the backdrop of a warming climate

โ€ผ๏ธACTIONS โ€ผ๏ธ

๐Ÿ›‘ At this time we understand the MODAP have not been given copies of all community objections in full - if you saved a copy of your objection, please email it to [email protected] to ensure it is properly considered by the panel.

โœ… Attend the MODAP on Tuesday 19 May 9.30am, City of Swan Council Chambers, Midland

๐Ÿ’œGIFTS FOR MUM ๐Ÿ’œ

๐ŸŒธSwan River Daisies are a low growing native annual that provide a spectacular burst of colour from now until Spring. Ideal to add colour to pots and garden beds, their pretty blooms also attract bees and butterflies. Easy to grow in Perth, and outlasting a bunch of flowers ten-fold, these plants make the ideal gift this Mother's Day!

๐Ÿ’š NATURE CARE DAY ๐Ÿ’š

On Earth Day 2026, 20 eager volunteers joined us to work directly on our vital Mandoon Bilya Restoration Project along the Helena River.

Volunteers came from a range of groups and organisations including Marriott Group, Ecolab and Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association.

The Helena River (Mandoon Bilya) is an ephemeral river surrounded by a crucial riparian ecosystem. This area is one of our longest standing but most complex restoration projects, located out the back of the Trillion Trees grounds and community nursery in Hazelmere. It is a vital wildlife refuge that we are actively working to restore, rebuilding local plant communities to provide habitat to the many remnant fauna species in the area.

Home to Western Long Neck Turtles, Rakali (native water rat), Brush Tailed Possums, Quenda, and a large variety of bird species.

On this day, the enthusiastic group of volunteers engaged in the construction of swales using fallen timber. They also planted 300 native seedlings along the riverbank and around our quenda hotel.

Nature care days are available throughout the year at locations in the Swan Valley. For more info please email [email protected]
