🚀🌊 From Deep Space to the High Seas: Aussie Seafarers Making History! ⚓🇦🇺

Australian seafarers and AMOU members were front and center for an unprecedented salvage mission: towing SpaceX’s massive 50-metre Starship across the Indian Ocean to safe harbour at Christmas Island.

Towing a multi-storey, floating stainless-steel rocket in open swells at a delicate 1 knot is uncharted territory, requiring world-class seamanship and navigation.

Key Highlights:

First-of-its-Kind Recovery: The first-ever maritime tow of a full-scale Starship stage from the open ocean.

Precision Seamanship: Maneuvering an aerospace giant safely through severe swells into protected waters.

Global History at Home: Bringing a historic space operation right to Australia's doorstep.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Gregory Kenneth 'Jacko' 'Birko' Jackson (13/01/1967 – 05/08/2026).

Greg lived 59 wonderful years filled with great memories, mateship, and laughter. As a Tug Master in the Port of Newcastle, Greg was a true legend on the water—a skilled, steady hand on the job, a reliable mate to his crew, and someone who brought genuine warmth and humour everywhere he went. He was a great bloke who made a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to work alongside him and call him a friend.

To celebrate Greg’s life and honor his memory, a service will be held:

⚓️ Work Shouldn't Hurt Survey Results ⚓️

The latest ACTU Work Shouldn't Hurt survey results highlight the ongoing need for stronger workplace health and safety protections across Australia.

⚠️ 21% of workers reported a work-related mental health injury or illness in the past 12 months. 11% reported a physical injury.

While some progress has been made in recognising psychosocial hazards at work, the findings show there is still much more to do.

The AMOU remains committed to advocating for safer, healthier workplaces for seafarers and all maritime workers. 🚢
