Veteran Health Matters 💛
At Vasey RSL Care, we love hearing positive wellbeing stories from our veteran community.
Recently, veterans from our V Centre Veteran Empowerment Program and Ex-Service Accommodation sites completed a 12-week PTSD Program at The Geelong Clinic, designed specifically for veterans and first responders.
Through individual and group therapy sessions, participants explored PTSD education, anxiety and anger management, assertive communication strategies, and practical tools to help process trauma and build healthier, happier lives. The program also provides specialised support for partners and families through support groups and relationship sessions.
One particularly inspiring story came from a V Centre participant who wrote a short piece to share. See the veteran’s reflection here:
“Throughout the past 20+ years I have been battling with an undiagnosed illness (PTSD). Like many veterans, I put myself second to put others first. For many years, PTSD dictated my life and it was always 2 steps in front of me with no clear direction nor purpose. The PTSD program running out of the Geelong clinic is one of a kind, and specific to first responders and veterans. Throughout the 12 weeks I gained knowledge, tools and lifelong friends, to help navigate the ups, the downs, and challenges of everyday life. This program with the caring and understanding nature of the facilitators, helped to guide myself to not only understanding the origins, and reasoning behind what I am going through, but I am now at peace with my PTSD. I no longer walk 2 steps behind, we now walk side by side, with the knowledge and understanding of PTSD signs and symptoms, I now use these to my advantage in everyday life. Not only have I made peace with my PTSD, one of the most important lessons I learnt throughout this program is that we are not alone, YOU are not alone!”
Stories like this remind us that recovery is possible, support works, and no veteran should face their challenges alone.
