On 3 December, Hawthorn Toastmasters had our final meeting for 2025, and enjoyed the annual Christmas dinner together.

The meeting featured a Christmas theme, with members wearing interesting outfits. The trivia game brought the meeting to a climax when members were divided into six groups and debated specific topics such as “Do you support drones replacing Santa Claus to deliver Christmas gifts?”

At the end of the meeting, we also demonstrated progress towards the newly introduced “Smedley Distinguished Club”. What a fun night!

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and holiday season. See you in the new year! 🎄🎅🏻🧑🏻‍🎄🎁

This weekend, some members of our club attended the District 73 annual conference, held at the Amora Riverwalk hotel. What an uplifting and inspiring experience it was! We were treated to workshops with Verity Price (2021 World Champion of Public Speaking) who came all the way from South Africa for the occasion. International Director (Region 12) Monique Tonna was our other keynote speaker. Between the two of them, it made for an unforgettable weekend. Congratulations to all the District contest winners - and to the new leadership team on your appointments! To those who have never been to a conference, or are in two minds about whether to go - it is highly recommended!

Tonight Hawthorn Toastmasters celebrated its 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣th meeting! In its 42-year history (yes, it has taken THAT long to get to this point!), it has seen many members come and go. Tonight was a gathering of the troops, old and new, for an evening of food, fun and frivolity. After a delicious dinner of pizza and other delights, we heard speeches from Miriam and Colin, the two longest-standing members of the club (37 and 35-year veterans respectively). We were also treated to video montages and a scrumptious cake. All the past presidents made a joint effort of blowing out the candles! It was such a special and memorable evening, thanks in no small part to Laura’s efforts (with a little help from her organising committee!) A giant thank you to all guests and everyone involved in making this happen, and for your fellowship. Bring on the next 1000!

🎉🎉🎉Who will be joining us on this momentous occasion? Come one, come all and earn a place in the history books. After all, it’s not very often that we notch up a new millennium (of meetings) - it has taken our club over 40 years to get to this point! Hope to see you there! 🎉🎉🎉

And so it begins…another year, kicked off with another joint meeting with Kew Toastmasters! It is customary to begin the new (calendar) year with a meeting of the minds - two great clubs coming together for fun and fellowship. Furthermore, we got back the Travel Gavel (how long it will be in our possession is another question). This is presented to the club, who has the most members visit another club’s meeting. Here is our president Adrian receiving it from Margaret, the Kew TM president, with D73 Program Quality Director looking on - and here’s to another fantastic year!

Tonight, Hawthorn Toastmasters had our final meeting for 2024, combined with our annual Christmas dinner. It was a fun night, with members wearing interesting Christmas-themed outfits (reindeer impersonations, anyone?) and enjoying delicious food. The trivia game was a hoot; who knew that “Jingle Bells” was the first Christmas Carol to be played in space?
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and holiday season and see you in the new year!🎄🎅🏻🧑🏻‍🎄🎁🌟
