UPDATE - BOXING DAY TRAGEDY BODY RECOVERED AT NEW PENRITH BEACH
A man has died at the new Penrith Beach just days after it opened to the public.
Police and rescue services this evening recovered of the body of the 35-year-old St Mary’s man following a 3.5 hour search of the lake this afternoon.
At about 2.35pm today emergency services rushed to the beach off Castlereagh Road, Castlereagh, after reports a man entered the water with a paddleboard before he was seen to go underwater and failed to resurface.
Officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command attended and commenced a search to locate the man, with the assistance of PolAir and police divers.
The man is yet to be formally identified; however, is believed to be that of the missing swimmer.
Earlier reports were that two people were in trouble on the water. A child was pulled safely to shore however the second person did not resurface.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Penrith Beach will be closed tomorrow (27th December 2023).
