Last weekend, bushcare volunteers, local residents and platypus enthusiasts took part in a planting day at Mitchell Park along Cattai Creek. The 200 trees and shrubs planted were native species typical of the local rainforest. By restoring vegetation in a previously cleared picnic area, we are helping to rebuild a healthy riparian habitat that will support platypus and other wildlife well into the future. Big thanks also to our partners, particularly Greater Sydney Local Land Services and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service 🌱

This week, our team showcased our blend of scientific research and impactful community work at the 2026 Platypus Conference, hosted at the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning. Featuring our PhD students, lead researcher and our project coordinator (pictured below), we learnt a lot by listening and sharing.

“I think we still really showed the amazing work we do. I was really proud of all our team.” - Our Waterkeeper, Michelle, lead researcher of the Hawkesbury Nepean Platypus Project

Last Saturday I had the privilege of stepping onto the TEDx stage to share a story that is deeply connected to both my research and my sense of place.

My talk centred on the platypus and the power of connection: how a single species can change the way people see their waterways, and why that shift is key to driving meaningful environmental change.

Being part of TEDx was both exciting and humbling. It was an opportunity to translate years of research and engagement into a story that connects with a broader audience - bridging science, community, and conservation.

A huge thank you to the organisers, fellow speakers, my team and everyone who supported me through the process.

I’ll share the talk once it’s live.

Dr Ryan will be diving into:

🔍 Fascinating Science: New insights into local platypus populations from Hornsby to the Southern Highlands.

🤝 Community Power: How a grassroots citizen science initiative grew into a massive collaboration.

🌱 Real-World Impact: The creation of "Planting for Platypus" days, better water policies, and Platypus Parks.
