Save Westernport

Save Westernport Save WP formed in 2018 when Crib Point on the Morn Peninsula was chosen for a gas factory&pipeline. These Lands & Waters are Bunurong.

After 3 years of defiant opposition AGL’s project was dumped- a huge victory for Community & Connection to Country. We stand for no further heavy industry in Westernport. Wetlands are proven to be extremely valuable for the preservation of marine life, carbon sequestering, and with rising sea levels, wetlands prove to mitigate the worst effects of coastal storms and flooding. We have to get seriou

s about Climate Change, no more 'business as usual'. Why can't we have a long term solution for Cribby? How about Solar power, wind power or renewable energy storage?

Swampy mangrove forests are staging a surprise comeback - which is good news for coastal communities and the climate.

The Australian Government says that it is committed to preventing new extinctions, but let’s look at the facts:

🐢 Research shows that the Government must lift spending on nature to 1% of the budget to prevent extinctions and conserve ecosystems.

👎 But, just 0.06% was allocated to on-ground nature conservation in this year’s budget, and the amount committed is even less in future years.

👎 Species recovery takes time, but the Saving Native Species fund - our main fund for preventing new extinctions - only has funding for 2 years, with less than $40M per year.

Australia is a world leader in mammal extinctions and ranks second in the world for biodiversity loss.

If we’re to turn around our track-record for extinctions, we also need to address our track-record of chronic underfunding for on-ground nature conservation.
