Bittern Recovery

The Bittern Recovery project aims to protect and improve the Bunyip bird, known as the Australiasian Bittern, in the coastal region of the Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Bitterns are listed as Endangered under the EPBC Act since 2014. They are one of 20 birds the Australian Government’s Threatened Species Strategy has identified for increased conservation efforts.

Until recently, little was known about the very secret life of Bitterns, however recent satellite tracking has illustrated how important the Glenelg Hopkins region is for these globally endangered birds. South West Victoria is rich in wetlands, from estuaries and coastal lagoons to floodplain swamps. The area provides critical seasonal and breeding habitat as well as drought refuge for Bitterns.

The Bittern Recovery project is working to find out more about the Bittern population; answering questions like:
