Keeping children safe in cars starts with the right restraint, fitted correctly for their age and size.

Did you know? Through the TAC L2P Program, Southern Grampians Shire Council has a baby seat installed in the L2P vehicle to support young mums in the program, helping them gain driving experience while keeping their little ones safe.

Every trip, every time. 🚗👶

🐨🐶 Slow Down for Animals 🦘🐾

See the sign - slow down!

Whether it’s wildlife crossing our roads or beloved pets close to home, slowing down can save lives.

Please stay alert while driving, especially at dawn and dusk when animals are most active. A few extra seconds can make all the difference for our furry friends — and help keep everyone on the road safe.

Drive carefully. Slow down. Look out for wildlife. 💚

🚸 School Crossing Safety Reminder 🚸

Slow down, stay alert, and take extra care around school crossings to help keep children and families safe.

Southern Grampians Shire Council continues to invest in road safety improvements, including new raised pedestrian crossings, intersection upgrades, and traffic-calming treatments designed to improve visibility and create safer environments for all road users.

Please obey speed limits, watch for crossing supervisors, and help keep our community safe. 💛

From Monday 1 June to Friday 31 July Victorians can apply for a 20% rebate on their car registration payments.

This will save the average Victorian driver up to $186 per vehicle, on their 2025-26 car registrations, helping ease cost of living pressures. You’ll be able to apply for the rebate via the Service Victoria app or website from 1 June.

The rebate is available to 4 million Victorians who own cars, motorcycles, utes, vans, light trucks, station wagons, and 4WD wagons.

The rebate will be limited to two vehicles per person and will calculate reduced amounts for concession card holders.

A fantastic day was had at our TAC L2P Mentor Training Day in the Southern Grampians Shire! 🚗👏

Volunteers gained the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to support young learner drivers in a safe, positive and encouraging environment.

Are you interested in becoming a mentor....?

To become an L2P Mentor, volunteers are required to hold a full Victorian Driver Licence, complete a satisfactory National Police Check, Working with Children Check and undertake mentor training.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the training! We can't wait to see you on the road soon! :-)

**Neil Behind the Wheel**

2026 has been named ‘The Year to Volunteer’. With this in mind, it’s time for us to shout out one of the most dedicated, and reliable volunteers in the Southern Grampians Shire – Mr. Neil Sandford.

At 83 years of age, Neil has already put in an unbelievable 930 hours for the Southern Grampians TAC L2P program. This is a program that matches eligible young learner drivers with a fully licenced mentor in a sponsored vehicle to help complete the mandatory 120 hours of driving practice required to obtain their P plates.

Across nine years in the role, Neil has brought his signature patience, humour and contagious sense of peace and calm to help dozens of young people pass their tests. Neil is an enormous advocate to the program and is always more than happy to chat with potential volunteers.

“My favourite part of the program,” said Neil, “is seeing the big smile on their face when they finally get that licence. I often walk down the street on a Saturday morning and hear a car beeping, and I’ll see a big smile and waving hand out the window and I’ll know it’s a past participant!”

With years of experience, Neil is one of the favourite mentors in the program and it’s easy to see why.

“It’s greatly satisfying when the young person begins to relax, and you can really enjoy a good joke and laugh together,” he said.

When he’s not helping the next generation of drivers, Neil commits his time to many other programs such as the Hamilton Lions Club, who dedicate their time to community service and fundraising for special causes.

Something that marks Neil as a truly special volunteer is his enthusiastic participation in youth Mental Health First Aid training. This training equips adults who support youth with the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem.

We are grateful to Neil for having learnt these skills and being prepared to apply them while working with the young people of the Southern Grampians Shire.

Fittingly, Neil was honoured with a Southern Grampians Shire Council Community Recognition Award at this years’ Australia Day celebrations. This award acknowledged his extraordinary capacity for volunteerism, his selflessness and his generosity of spirit.

Anyone who has met Neil can attest that he is not one for glory. He is a man who believes in his community and the power of helping one another.

Southern Grampians Shire Council L2P Coordinator Mel Russell summed up his contribution perfectly, simply saying:
“I wish I had ten Neils, but he’s one of a kind.”

🚗💙 National Volunteer Week 2026 💙🚗

This week we celebrate the incredible volunteers who make our TAC L2P program possible.

Our volunteer mentors generously give their time, patience and encouragement to support young learner drivers in gaining confidence behind the wheel and working towards their licence. Every hour driven helps create greater independence and opportunity for local young people.

The impact our mentors make reaches far beyond driving lessons — they provide guidance, reassurance and positive community connection every step of the way.

Thank you to all of our amazing L2P volunteers for the difference you make in the lives of young people across our community. We truly could not do it without you! 👏
