Thankyou to our families and supporters for fundraising for Hackham Girl Guides simply by shopping at Drakes. The current amount raised is $136.71.
Last year we received a $100 voucher from Drakes.
We use the voucher towards our camp food budget to help reduce the final cost of camp for our Girl Guides.
You can either use the app and nominate us to receive community dollars every time you shop or we can provide you with a barcode keytag to scan every time you shop.

Last night at Hackham Girl Guides we focussed on food from different countries as part of the Food Badge.
We started the night with knot practice of reef knots and clove hitch 2 ways.
The younger Bilby Girl Guides unit, aged 5 - 9, decided at the beginning of the term, to make Aussie scrolls (vegemite and cheese pastry), Chinese Fried Rice and Nutella Fairy bread, another Aussie classic. They worked in 3 patrols, with support from Leaders.
The older Groovy Girl Guides unit aged 10 -13, made American style mini hamburgers.
Both units then taste tested all of the food and helped with the clean up.
One of the oldest girls from Nashwauk unit, ages 14 -17, is helping in the Bilby unit as a Junior Leader, guiding name Platypus, is undertaking the Trefoil 3 in Leadership. Platypus researched and ran a food groups game, feedback from the girls was they enjoyed the game, best part was drawing.
Some of the Groovy Guides are heading overseas, interstate, or camp during the next couple of weeks, their challenge while away, is to make note of the different types of food they see/consume and report back.
Bilby Guides finished up the night with some story games, planning for patrol night later in the term, and the girls taking turns leading campfire songs, favourite songs at the moment are Penguins and Fishy song.

Over the last 2 weeks, 2 new girls have joined, 2 visited last night, in the Bilby and Groovy units. Welcome to the Girl Guide family.
We do have some remaining places. Contact to find out more information.

Hackham Girl Guides camped at Douglas Scrub Girl Guides South Australia Inc. Camp grounds from 5pm Friday 22nd May to 1pm on Sunday 24th with Victor Harbor Girl Guides 100 Years, McLaren Vale Girl Guides, sharing a wide game on Saturday afternoon with Happy Valley Guides.

We had wonderful weather until Sun morning when the rain settled in making camp conditions challenging for our first time campers. They all rose to the occasion and we managed to get all of our tents down, in between showers, flys soaking wet, however tents mostly dry, as we moved the tents into the shed to wipe down and fold. Leader's houses have flys and tents airing, along with their own camp bedding.

A big thankyou to Bandicoot for helping put some tents up Friday night in the dark.
Saturday morning we went on the Nature trail through the Heritage Scrub, noticing the ants were preparing for the rain by building up the edges around their entrances.
We also enjoyed the Adventure Trail, followed by a wide game in the afternoon with lots of skills based activities : mini campfires to toast marshmallows, first aid scenarios, making and firing bazookas, knots and tripods, flower crowns and using hammers to imprint flower dyes onto calico bags.
Sat evening we enjoyed a campfire and singing, loudly 😁. Sunday was all about packing up camp, eating, celebrating one of the Guides 13th birthday, all while trying to stay dry.

Thankyou to all of the leaders and helpers who put in time before, during and after camp to make the weekend such a success and fun for the girls.
Here are some photos of the weekend.

Hackham Girl Guides over the last couple of weeks have been collecting items for RSPCA, making dog toys out of old material and sewing together knotted squares to make blankets for the animals in care waiting for their forever home.

This is one example of service to community our girls and leaders undertake throughout the year.

They have also been busy with various activities towards the Pets Badge.

A couple of our Girl Guides, along with a Leader, attended the Onkaparinga Citizenship Ceremony last week, to hand out flowers and koalas as part of Community Service.

Our Girl Guide Trefoil Guild ( a group for adults who are Guide Leaders, previous Leaders and previous members) they collect non- perishable in date food items, sanitary products, new underwear and socks, new unopened bathroom products.

These items are collected ongoing and are then donated throughout the year to:
It's in the Bag for Share the Dignity;
Coolock House accomodation and services for girls and young women experiencing homelessness;
Amanda Rishworths Winter Appeal.

You are welcome to drop any of the above items at the hall Wed between 4.00pm - 6.30 pm during school term.

Term 1 at Hackham Girl Guides is well under way. Both the Bilby Unit (5-9 year olds) and the Groovy Unit (10-13 year olds) are working through the Pet Badge with challenges they helped to plan last Term, as well as Promise and Law activities and World Guiding activies.

So far we've made Pet/animal journals from scrap paper, learnt how to bind them. Learnt new ways to decorate the journals.

We have been busy with various activities, learning new campfire songs, games, practicing our knots, plaiting (all great hand eye co-ordination skills) and a sense of achievement when finally conquering the reef knot tied behind their backs. Ongoing life skills cooking food, as we do like to come together and share some form of snack the girls make each week - with support from Leaders.

Hackham Girl Guides and Leaders also participated in a day at Douglas Scrub, the Girl Guide campground, with Girl Guides and leaders from around South Australia, to celebrate World Thinking Day.

We have welcomed a Junior Leader (15 years) from the Nashwauk unit ( 14 - 17 year olds) who is volunteering with the Bilby Unit, we have welcomed some new girls and their families into Girl Guiding, with one ready to make her promise later this term.

And we still have many weeks to come, with a visit from RSPCA, with girls collecting items to donate, as part of their service to community committment, a bring your pet night, a cooking night planned by the 5-9 year olds, visiting virtual zoos, compass work, Easter craft in there somewhere and finishing up the term with our families getting together, out in our community, sharing a BBQ and activities on the last night of term.

Phew!
Wonder what's in store for Term 2 🤔 Leaders look forward to brainstorming with the girls later this term.
