๐ŸŒ ONE WEEK UNTIL WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY ๐ŸŒ

In one week, communities across the Sunshine Coast and around the world will come together to celebrate World Environment Day ๐Ÿ’š

At SCEC, World Environment Day is the beginning of WEDFest โ€” a month-long celebration of environmental action, community connection, education and caring for the places we love!

Over the coming weeks, WEDFest 2026 will bring together:
๐ŸŒฑ community groups
๐ŸŒŠ environmental advocates
๐Ÿจ conservation organisations
๐ŸŽถ creatives and educators
๐Ÿ’š volunteers and supporters

All working toward a healthier, more sustainable future for the Sunshine Coast.

Environmental change doesnโ€™t happen through one person alone โ€” it happens through collective community action, shared knowledge and people who care enough to get involved ๐ŸŒ

We canโ€™t wait to celebrate with our members, network and wider environmental community next Friday!

Thank you Sunshine Coast Environment Council for the important work you do.

๐ŸŒฟ Advocacy Matters ๐ŸŒฟ

SCEC President Paul McDonald and CEO Lisa Malcolm recently participated in Ministerial Environmental Round Tables with Queensland Minister for the Environment, Andrew Powell.

Advocating on important environmental issues affecting the Sunshine Coast region, including the Inter-Urban Break, Protected Areas, the Sunshine Coast Waterways Authority, and non-lethal alternatives to shark nets.

A day of discussions between the Minister, Environment Department Directors, SCEC and representatives from all Conservation Councils across Queensland have helped secure several commitments from the Minister.

When delivered will improve environmental accountability and better protect biodiversity and the ecosystems upon which we all depend.

For more than 45 years, SCEC has continued to represent and advocate for the protection of the Sunshine Coast environment ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿข๐ŸŒ Happy World Turtle Day! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿข
You can celebrate the gentle, wise, and ancient creatures that have roamed the Earth for over 200 million years. Turtles and tortoises are not only symbols of longevity and perseverance, but they also play vital roles in ecosystems worldwideโ€”such as maintaining balance in aquatic food chains and supporting the health of wetlands and coastal habitats.
But these amazing animals face serious threats: habitat destruction, plastic pollution, climate change, and illegal wildlife trade are pushing many species toward extinction.
What can you do?
โœ… Learn more about turtle conservation
โœ… Reduce plastic use
โœ… Support protected marine and coastal habitats
โœ… Never buy wild-caught turtles as pets
โœ… Make a donation to Mary River Turtle project - Tiaro Landcare
Each small step we take can help ensure these incredible creatures continue to thrive.

๐Ÿ™Œ National Volunteer Week โ€“ THIS IS YOUR YEAR TO VOLUNTEER!

๐Ÿ’“Where would we be without our generous volunteer community?

๐ŸขMRCCC is extremely grateful for the passion and commitment of its volunteers
โ€ข MRCCC committee past and present over 249 meetings!
โ€ข Delegates across the region
โ€ข Citizen Scientists who take part in critical projects โ€“ such as Waterwatch & Find and Frog in February
โ€ข Landholders across the region improving their environmental land management practises
โ€ข Young people caring for the environment and being guardians of the future.

๐Ÿ’ซWe honour the contributions of volunteers and thank those who give their time and invite others to discover how volunteering can create connection, purpose, and lasting positive change.
THANK YOU!

Fabulous turnout for the MRCCCโ€™s inaugural Fishing competition at Petrie Park Tiaro on Sunday. Thank you to our sponsors Adrian from Wide bay seedlings, Ozfish/BCF and B & H Rural Tiaro for providing fabulous prizes. Thank you to the Qld Freshwater Fish Stocking Association's Charlie Ladd and the Lake Borumba Fish stocking group's Peter Chambers for supporting the event, the Tiaro Lions who did a great sausage sizzle for everyone, and Marilyn Connell - Mary River Turtle project - Tiaro Landcare for supporting the event! Longest tilapia was 400 mm weighing 1.18 kg. Longest fork tailed catfish was 780 mm weighing a whopping 2.59 kg. Great to see so many sooty and barred grunter removed from the river. Although this species is native to Australia, it has been introduced to the Mary River system, posing a threat to all our very special aquatic species including the critically endangered Mary River turtle and the white throated snapping turtle.
