STATEMENT OF CONDOLENCE: Gumatj Aboriginal Corporation Mourns the Passing of Mr B Marika AM
"It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Mr B Marika AM, a proud Rirratjingu leader, respected Elder and former long-serving Chairperson of the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation.
On behalf of the Gumatj clan, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Marika family, the Rirratjingu clan and all those whose lives were touched by his profound leadership and generosity.
Mr B Marika and I grew up together on Yolŋu Country, sharing many experiences that shaped our lives and our commitment to our people. Throughout his life, he carried the responsibility of leadership with humility, strength and a deep belief in the future of Yolŋu communities.
His contribution to our region will be remembered through his lifelong dedication to education and cultural preservation, and his commitment to creating opportunities for future generations. He understood that true leadership is about bringing people together, protecting culture and ensuring our young people inherit a strong foundation.
Today we honour a respected leader, a lifelong friend and a man whose influence will be felt for generations to come. May he rest in peace, knowing that the work he devoted his life to will continue."
