Close to 50 people enjoyed a splendid afternoon of music, comprising both harp solos and duets with piano, in the Gunning Courtroom yesterday.

Gunning Focus Group was delighted to host world-renowned harpist Alice Giles AM and excellent pianist Arnan Wiesel at a special Wendy Coley tribute concert.

We can consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have had this opportunity to enjoy such great performances from two terrific players.

The intimate atmosphere and acoustics of the Courtroom so suited the music we heard.

There should be a report on this concert in the Upper Lachlan Gazette in the next week or so.

🎻 🎻 “I loved every minute of it”, “This was delightful”, “Thank you for another excellent show” and “Absolutely fabulous,” were among the parting comments volunteered by some of the 33 concert goers after the Barada Flute Quartet played in the Gunning Courtroom on Saturday afternoon.

The music was performed just as the composers Mozart, Haydn and Ries intended, as the works were written to be played by skilled and devoted amateur musicians in an intimate chamber music setting. That’s exactly what we enjoyed on the day.

GFG thanks John Smiles (flute), Valerie Jackson (violin), Paul Whitbread (viola and informative commentary) and Jane Smith (cello). These excellent musicians have played together for enjoyment for around 15 years. This event was their premiere public performance. And a very satisfying one it was too.

GFG passes all net returns to performers, less $3 per ticket sold for essential asset maintenance and administration costs. The Baradas are donating their box office payment to Dainere’s Rainbow – an ACT-based charity dedicated to raising funds for Australian research into childhood brain cancer and providing support to affected families.

🎻 🎻Three terrific chamber music pieces, one of them a work acclaimed by many aficionados for having “the most beautiful accompanied solo for flute ever written”, will be yours to savour when the Barada Quartet makes its first appearance in the Gunning Courtroom at 2pm on Saturday, 11 April.

Enjoy music from the classical and early romantic periods by Ferdinand Ries, Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – all composers of note (pictured below). While Mozart’s Flute Quartet 1 in D major, K285 is a standout piece, you can expect the afternoon to be filled with “sparkling”, “charming”, “witty” and “highly melodic” compositions.

You will savour this marvellous music to the full in a comfortable, intimate and atmospheric chamber music venue, frequently praised by musicians and audiences alike for its excellent acoustics.

🎻 🎻 THE TWO EINSTEINS AGREE. Alfred Einstein (musicologist and Mozart biographer) and Albert Einstein (scientist and philosopher of E=MC2 fame, pictured here) would strongly recommend you get along to the upcoming concert by the Barada Flute Quartet in the Gunning Courtroom at 2pm on Saturday, 11 April.

This excellent ensemble of flute and three strings is excited to bring us music from the classical and early romantic periods. Pieces by Ferdinand Ries, Haydn and Mozart - his Flute Quartet 1 in D major, K285!

Scientist and amateur musician Albert Einstein said, “Mozart’s music is so pure and beautiful that I see it as a reflection of the inner beauty of the universe itself.” Musicologist Alfred described Mozart’s K285 as "of the sweetest melancholy, perhaps the most beautiful accompanied solo ever written for the flute".

Expect a cracker of a concert. While K285 is a standout, the pieces by Ries and Haydn are not too shabby either. They are variously described as “sparkling”, “charming”, “witty” and “highly melodic”. You will hear the hum and thrum of the instruments up close in an intimate performance space with excellent acoustics. An experience to be relished.

🎵 🎵 🎵 “Sheer Joy”, “Uplifting” and “Fabulous” said concertgoers departing the Andante Andante Choir’s performance in front of a packed Gunning Courtroom on Sunday afternoon.

This ensemble is commonly known as The ABBA Choir. It comprised some two dozen singers and musicians inspiringly led by the athletic and energetic violinist, kazoo player and comic actor Katie Cole. Unquestionably, the almost 50 strong audience just loved the entire show. We sang along [whether we were ABBA fans or not], laughed and smiled, and clapped and clapped the entire afternoon.

The choir was joined by drums, recorders and flute together, at times, with massed kazoos. Their long-term accompanist, Crookwell’s Katrina Rivera, made excellent use of Gunning’s grand piano and her guitar [not simultaneously].

It might be a step too far to say Andante does ABBA better than ABBA. But the group’s obvious love of the oeuvre combined with their professionalism made for an outstandingly joyous afternoon.

Several members of the choir told us they love playing in Gunning. And we love them playing here as well. This was Andante Andante’s third performance here for the Gunning Focus Group and we very much hope it will not be their last. You don’t have to be an ABBA tragic to delight in this choir’s unique and entertaining take on the music.
