πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ MABO DAY 2026 β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€

Today, Red Chief Local Aboriginal Land Council joins communities across the nation in commemorating Mabo Day, marking the anniversary of the historic 1992 High Court Decision that changed Australia forever.

The Mabo decision overturned the harmful doctrine of Terra Nullius β€” the false belief that Australia was "land belonging to no one" before colonisation. This landmark ruling finally recognised what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always known: our enduring connection to Country, culture, community and identity.

We honour the courage, determination and vision of Eddie Koiki Mabo, along with Sam Passi, David Passi, Celuia Mapo Salee and James Rice, whose tireless fight for justice paved the way for Native Title recognition and strengthened the foundation of Land Rights across Australia.

As we reflect on this important milestone, we also acknowledge that the fight for Land Rights continues. Here in New South Wales, Aboriginal Land Rights remain under threat through the proposed Crown Land Management Amendment (Statutory Review) Bill 2026. Red Chief LALC stands alongside NSWALC and the wider Land Rights Network in opposing changes that may weaken the hard-fought rights of Aboriginal people.

Today is a day to remember, reflect and recommit ourselves to protecting Country for future generations.

✊🏾 We honour those who fought before us.
🌿 We stand strong for Country today.
πŸ”₯ We continue the fight for tomorrow.

This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal Land.

This National Reconciliation Week, we are calling on our governments to be truly β€˜All In’ on reconciliation.

NSWALC is asking for genuine action to address Aboriginal disadvantage in NSW. As part of this commitment, we firmly reinstate our opposition to the Crown Land Management Amendment (Statutory Review) Bill 2026.

Introduced by the NSW Government, the amendments fundamentally alter how Crown Land is managed across the State and raise serious concerns about the future of Land Rights.

If the NSW Government wants to be β€˜All In’ on Reconciliation, it must start by genuinely consulting Aboriginal people on the laws and decisions that impact our lives, our futures, and our rights.

For more information, head to the NSWALC website to read our complete media release.
