🐨 WILDLIFE ALERT 🐨

We have a handsome, tagged koala visiting Osprey House this week. He was hanging out by the Lagoon this morning, even giving our visitors a ground-level show as he waddled between trees! He climbed right down to the ground to find a new tree, giving everyone an amazing up-close view.

⚠️ Drive Safe: Because he’s exploring, please take it nice and slow on Dohles Rocks Rd today. Let’s keep our local icon safe!

George and Hope still mating throughout this last week.
Marina has still not returned to the nest, but we have had some possible sightings of her down along the foreshore.

🚨 Wildlife Sighting Alert! 🚨

Since the change in weather yesterday afternoon we have had a pair of Pacific Baza’s hanging around the Centre.

Did you know that a main part of their diet consists of large insects? They spend a lot of time watching the tree canopies before diving feet-first into the dense foliage to grab their prey.

🐟🐠George is building up his strength ready for his busiest time of the year.

When Hope is sitting on the eggs and tending to the chicks, George is the main provider of fish to the nest. He also has to eat himself and will often eat the fish head prior to delivering the rest into the nest for Hope and the chicks.

As the chicks grow the food demand also grows and George is out all day hunting for fish. Osprey are fishing specialists and their diet consists of 99% freshly caught fish!

Ospreys have spiky pads on their feet (spicules), sharp talons, and a reversible outer toe that allows them to firmly grip slippery fish. You can see some of these features on George's feet here.
