Last Thursday we wrapped up our field day series for the Over the Fence project with our Livestock Tech day at Rob, Mandy and Fletcher Taylor's place near Greenethorpe.

Great day for it, following a bit of rain the day before, with around 50 people in attendance. It was an info-packed day set to fill the heads of local farmers with some useful insight into different technology that is being used to assist with animal and grazing management, improve animal health, capture and use data to fast track breeding objectives, increase efficiencies and improve productivity and profitability.

First up, Fletcher Taylor gave a quick overview of the host property and the different tech they are adopting including sheep EID, handling equipment, Agriwebb, weather stations and soil probes. Bridget Parkman from followed with some great guidance on how to get the most out of tech for making livestock decisions.

Andrew Dowd, a local farmer from Gooloogong then blew a few minds with his presentation on how he is using HalterHQ virtual fencing with his cattle to manage his pastures on another level to his existing electric fencing. Andrew also spoke of other tech he uses on farm including Farmbot and Agiriwebb.

After lunch, James Burge, another farmer from Cootamundra, pulled all the morning's information together to provide a very practical talk about how he is making use of technology such as Optiweigh, EID and handling equipment to improve livestock performance and profitability.

The day was supported by several Tech companies and other organisations, who all got to provide a quick 5-minute plug for their products and services. These included Optiweigh, Moses and Son, INCYT, Delta Agribusiness, Central West Local Land Services and Remote Reach.

Farmers also had the opportunity to find out more from one another and see demos from our trade displays over morning tea and our bbq lunch, provided by Unwind in Grenfell.

A huge thank you to the Taylor family for the use of their shed for the day, our trade displays, our speakers and to everyone who came along.

This field day was supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust.

Drop into the Wattle Room at 38 Main St, Grenfell over the long weekend to check out the Weddin Wattle Display!

We have put together some information on our local species with some memorabilia kindly loaned by Pam Livingstone and you can pick up a copy of the Weddin Wattles - a local guide and start exploring the wattle trails.

The guide costs $10 and every purchase receives a free wattle lovingly grown and donated by the Weddin Community Native Nursery. All the wattles can be found in the book, so you can pick your favourite, and all proceeds go back into Weddin Landcare initiatives.

The display will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Mikla Lewis will be around if anyone wants to chat wattles.

There's also a wonderful photography exhibition and artworks by Julie Gilmore and Julie Ferguson to see while you're there 🎨

Are Noisy Miner birds causing chaos at your place?

Max Breckenridge and Jayden Gunn from BirdLife Australia are coming to Grenfell this Friday 29th May to run a workshop on Managing Noisy Miners.

The workshop will include a morning session to share information before participants will head to 'Rosemont' to see the work that Wayne Lavers and Mikla Lewis have done on their property to control Noisy Miner numbers.

Not to be confused with the introduced Indian Mynas, Noisy Miners are native birds that cause issues in our ecosystems. They are an aggressive honeyeater and due to habitat modification and reduction in predators, can become overpopulated and drive out our smaller woodland birds. If you are having issues with them at your place, this workshop will provide some practical management options!

Time & Date: 10 am to 3pm, Friday 29th May.
Venue: Grenfell Visitors Centre, 88 Main St, Grenfell.
RSVP: [email protected]

Morning tea and lunch will be provided.

In our first Over the Fence visual story, we visit Graham and Lynne Watt near Greenethorpe, NSW. You can view their full story via our YouTube channel 👇
https://youtu.be/Wa8_r8NthrI

Graham and Lynne’s story is one of deep love and connection with the land on which they work and live. It highlights the importance of family farms in caring for the environment – those generations worth of intricate knowledge and stewardship are priceless.

We love Graham and Lynne’s simple approach to farming and life. In a world of industrial and corporatised farming, it is nice to be reminded that farming does not have to be fast-paced and big. The mentality of ‘do one thing and do it well’ is working for them. They have committed to a system that is better for the environment and their lifestyle, using holistic management to improve the health and robustness of the plants, the animals, the soil and, ultimately, the whole environment.

The film also raises issues of succession – who will carry on our legacy and care for the land when we’re gone?

The loss of Graham and Lynne’s eldest son, Jack, and their need to re-think their future shows the resilience needed across many aspects of farming – the ability to flex and adapt when things don’t go as planned.

We’re sure the Watt’s story will resonate with many farmers out there. Sometimes the benefit of connecting with other farmers is purely for the comfort of knowing that we’re not in it alone and that there are other farmers out there facing similar challenges.

The key benefit of our Over the Fence project is giving farmers the chance to connect with other farmers and gain insight into their operations, businesses and way of life to provide fresh ideas, knowledge, validation and peer support.

To encourage this connection, we will be releasing a series of visual stories that focus on six local farming families. These farmers have opened their doors and farm gates to share their stories and we are very thankful to them for being so open and honest about their methods, motivations, challenges and triumphs.

Farmers face a gamble with the elements every single day. Everything we can do to reduce the impact of this variability helps ensure we can continue to produce the food, fibre and social fabric needed by our community and our planet. Our six participating farms do this in very different ways, showing that there is no silver-bullet when it comes to addressing agricultural or environmental challenges.

Our visual stories are being thoughtfully captured by Grenfell boy, .com

Stuart has been incredible to work with and has put a lot of time and heart into the project. You can clearly see his passion for sustainable agriculture and stories from rural and remote areas in each film.

We can’t wait to share these stories with you here and via our YouTube channel over the next 6 months. For now, please enjoy this little preview.
