📚 DO YOU KNOW? ⚜️ | OLAVE BADEN-POWELL: THE WOMAN WHO HELPED SCOUTING REACH THE WORLD! 🌍

When we talk about the history of Scouting, we often celebrate Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the Founder of the Scout Movement. But today, let us shine a light on the remarkable woman who stood beside him and helped shape the future of millions of girls around the world.

Meet Olave St Clair Baden-Powell, the wife of Lord Baden-Powell and a legendary figure in the history of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting! ❤️⚜️

Here are some interesting facts you may not know about her:

Olave was born on 22 February 1889, the same day and month as Robert Baden-Powell, who was born on 22 February 1857. Their shared birthday later became an important date for Scouts and Guides worldwide.

Olave met Robert Baden-Powell while travelling by ship in 1912. Despite their age difference of 32 years, they married that same year.

Olave became Chief Guide for Britain in 1918 and was elected World Chief Guide in 1930. Through her leadership, she helped strengthen the international Guiding Movement.

Olave visited 111 countries during her lifetime, meeting Guides and Scouts, attending gatherings and encouraging the growth of the Movement across the world.

Robert Baden-Powell died in 1941, but Olave continued supporting the Guiding Movement for decades afterwards. Her dedication helped keep the spirit of the Movement alive internationally.

Olave and Robert had three children: Peter, Heather and Betty. While their parents became internationally recognised figures, the family also had a private life beyond Scouting.

In 1932, King George V appointed Olave a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE), recognising her outstanding service.

Every year on 22 February, Scouts and Guides around the world celebrate their shared connection through World Thinking Day, remembering the birthdays of Robert and Olave Baden-Powell and celebrating international friendship and unity.

Olave Baden-Powell reminds us that leadership is not only about starting a movement; it is also about nurturing it, inspiring others and ensuring that its values reach future generations.

Her story teaches us that behind every great movement are people whose dedication, sacrifice and service help it grow.

International Day of the Girl – 11 October

Girls aren’t waiting for a better world; they are building it!

This International Day of the Girl, we are celebrating the fact that girls are ‘doers’ – people who take action, rather than just think or talk about it.

At Guides, girls are supported to grow their ‘doing’ superpower, to turn their ideas into reality and make a real impact in their worlds. We are empowering girls, highlighting their rights, focusing on resilience and breaking the gender stereotypes.
