A very warm welcome to Tarni, our new Banyule L2P Program Officer.

Tarni has extensive experience across the not-for-profit sector, having formerly worked for organisations like Big Group Hug and the Little Treasures Foundation

Tarni is deeply passionate about volunteer coordination because she “finds it so rewarding seeing people doing something for the good of their community.”

Tarni’s background also includes emergency management with the CFA, for which she was awarded the Australian Emergency Services Medal.

Outside of work, Tarni is kept busy by her cheeky twin daughters! She enjoys going to the footy and adventuring out to the Murray River for family camping trips.

Welcome to the team, Tarni - we are really excited about the skills and enthusiasm you bring to the role!

A huge thank you to Vicki Ward MP for Eltham and Colin Brooks MP for stopping by the BNLLEN office last week.

We were grateful for the opportunity to discuss the challenges, experiences and aspirations of young people in our community.

Thank you for taking the time to listen, ask questions and share your ideas. We really appreciated your enthusiasm and support for local initiatives that are helping young people build confidence, skills and career aspirations.

It was heartening to discuss a shared vision of supporting local young people to transition from school to further education, training and employment.

We look forward to continuing the conversation!

May was a busy month for the BNLLEN Industry Speaker Bank!

Students at Greensborough Secondary College heard about what it takes to succeed in entrepreneurship from Sharon, who runs a floristry business and Richard, the owner of HC Catering.

Meanwhile, Katrina from A Fitting Connection talked about pathways in the trades, and Ryan from Carlton Football Club gave students a look inside the sports industry.

At Bundoora Secondary College, 60 students took part in a careers rotation session, having an opportunity to speak directly to Sharon, Richard, Katrina and Ryan about their career journeys.

Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major students at Viewbank College heard from Steve (AGA) about the variety of apprenticeships, pathways and opportunities available through trades and vocational learning.

Thank you to all our speakers for giving their time to support young people in our community and helping students learn more about the many different pathways available after school.

The Term 2 Northern Applied Learning and SBAT Network Meeting opened with an insightful presentation from the VCAA on the Senior Secondary School Reforms, with a particular focus on updates to the VCE Vocational Major, the Victorian Pathways Certificate, and strategies to strengthen student engagement. A huge thank you to the VCAA team for your ongoing support of our network and your continued commitment to applied learning.

We were also fortunate to host a panel featuring three schools - The Pavilion, Peter Lalor Secondary College, and Marymede Catholic College - who shared their experiences and reflections on the evolving needs of applied learning students. Their contributions sparked a thoughtful discussion on engagement strategies and the importance of responsive, student‑centred practice.

It is always a pleasure to see a community of dedicated professionals come together with a shared commitment to improving education, training, and future employment opportunities for young people. Thank you to all our network members who show up each quarter, contribute generously, and help strengthen this collaborative space.

Thank you to everyone who attended the BNLLEN Annual General Meeting on 20 May. At this year’s AGM, we celebrated 25 years of BNLLEN supporting local young people.

We were able to spotlight some great new initiatives developed in 2025 as well as reflect on the increased demand for programs across the region.

Esme, a Year 11 student from a local school, spoke about her experience participating in the Work Inspirations Program - a hands-on creative design, manufacturing and sustainable industries experience delivered in partnership with Kebet Packaging and The Cardboard Mill. You can check out a video of the Work Inspirations video here - https://youtu.be/dfoUxyfns90

As a major sponsor of the Banyule Nillumbik Youth Jobs Hub, Guest Speaker Michael Maloney, Community Bank Hurstbridge, Diamond Creek, Eltham, Doreen-Mernda & Kinglake, celebrated the launch and early success of this local jobs platform - https://bnyouthjobs.com.au/

This year’s highlights included supporting 929 students through RIJI interviews, delivering VIC VICE virtual career experiences to 629 students, engaging 147 students in the Stories from My Life Program and facilitating 274 Work-Based Learning placements for local young people.

BNLLEN is proud to celebrate National Reconciliation Week which kicks off today. This year’s theme, All In for Reconciliation, calls on all Australians to take meaningful action toward a more just, equitable, and reconciled nation.

At BNLLEN, we recognise the importance of creating opportunities for young people that are inclusive, culturally safe, and grounded in respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures.

Reconciliation is not a one-off moment, it’s an ongoing commitment. It’s about listening, learning, and taking action in our everyday work and within our communities.

We encourage our partners, volunteers and wider network to reflect on what being All In looks like, and how each of us can contribute to positive change.

26/05/2026

At BNLLEN, our volunteers are one of our greatest strengths.

Volunteer Week is always a welcome opportunity to spotlight all of our wonderful volunteers, who generously contribute their time, knowledge and experience to support local young people.

Some of our volunteers have been contributing their time and experience for over a decade!

Volunteers are at the heart of our programs including RIJI, Stories From My Life, Work Inspirations, Industry Speaker Bank, and the TAC L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program.

These programs rely on people choosing to step up and share their skills, knowledge, and workplaces with our future workforce and generations. They succeed because of the commitment, consistency, and willingness that Volunteers undertake to work with schools and students.

Thank you to all our incredible volunteers for your contribution.

The VIC VICE virtual reality program was recently delivered at Concord School with Year 11 and 12 students participating in a career exploration session.

Students used VR to explore a range of industries and workplaces, stepping into different roles and environments to get a clearer sense of possible future pathways.

The session focused on helping students connect interests and strengths with real-world careers in a practical, immersive way, with the carpentry and electric vehicle mechanic experiences being the most popular!

If you would like more information about bringing VIC VICE career exploration into your Banyule or Nillumbik school, get in touch with Courtney at [email protected]

An L2P Nillumbik Mentor Morning Tea was held in April at the Eltham Girl Guides Hall, bringing together 10 mentors from the program.

It was an opportunity for connection and the sharing of practical approaches to supporting learner drivers. Over coffee and cake, the group discussed driving tips and everyday experiences in the program, reinforcing the value of having a network of mentors who can learn from each other as they go.

If you are interested in becoming an L2P mentor in Nillumbik, contact 0408 979 377. For Banyule, you can get in touch on 0430 038 450.
