The State Emergency Service (SES) is a volunteer organisation which is gazetted under the Fire and Emergency Services act of 1998. SES volunteers train to assist their community before, during and after incidents of natural disasters such as storms, cyclones, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis. There are other types of incidents such as Car VS House where the SES are called upon to assist in making
the sight safe. Generally, the incidents SES volunteers respond to are in the City of Mandurah local government area however there are times when the SES volunteers can be requested to deploy within the state, interstate and internationally. The SES Volunteers are highly trained in search techniques and under the direction of the WA Police, who own the searches for missing persons, carry out the ground searches. Although the SES volunteers are not trained to fight fires, they are trained to assist the fire response groups in transport, communications and incident management. These various roles include transporting fire fighters and other personnel, delivering welfare(food), filling fixed winged water bombers and doing restricted access permits (RAPs) - which are used by residents to gain access back to their property after a major incident once it is declared safe to do so. SES volunteers are dedicated people who train weekly to build skills and knowledge that they can use to benefit their community. They also do the occasional skills specific weekend courses which include – storm damage operations, land search team member, hand held radio, navigation, chainsaw, on and off road driving, leadership and other relevant courses. At Mandurah SES we are also passionate about being involved in community events, like the Mandurah Crab Festival, the ANZAC Day parade, New Years Eve fireworks as well as other events.
