The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence runs annually from 25 November to 10 December 2026... but of course we raise awareness and offer support all year round.

Did you know about the following services we provide with our Many Rivers Family Violence Prevention & Legal Service (FVPLS) teams in Grafton and Kempsey?

Funded by Legal Aid NSW, our Many Rivers FVPLS focus is on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients who have been through, or are still going through, Domestic or Family Violence.

We accept both walk-ins and scheduled appointments via referrals from other services.

We understand clients can be in many different stages of their healing journey, and we are here to support clients where they are at, in any way we can.

Our teams provide comprehensive support to individuals and families through the following key services:

- Free Legal Advice; Guidance on legal rights and options.
- Court Support; Assistance in navigating the court process, including emotional and practical support.
- Parental Rights Advocacy; Helping parents understand and protect their rights.
- Victim Support; Compassionate aid for victims of crime or abuse, ensuring safety and access to resources.
- Education & Community Building; Workshops, programs, and initiatives to empower and connect communities.
- Case Management; Personalised support to coordinate services and achieve positive outcomes.

WOMEN’S SELF-AWARENESS & SELF-DEFENCE CLASS

Gurehlgam, in partnership with Brett Austin from Grafton Diamond Martial Arts, is delivering a fantastic 10-week Women’s Self-Awareness and Self-Defence Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women aged 18 and over.

This is a great opportunity for women to build confidence, learn practical self-defence techniques and connect with other women in a safe, supportive and culturally safe environment. 💪🏽

🥊 Practical self-defence techniques
👀 Situational awareness and managing risk
💪 Building confidence and personal safety skills
❤️ Connecting with other women in the community

Congratulations to Damien and the whole Loving Life team with their 27th anniversary!

On many occasions, and increasingly so, we have enjoyed the opportunity to come on the show for important community announcements, DV prevention and victim / survivor support messages, and for friendly chats.

We love having the Loving Life fm caravan at our bigger events.

Did you know that October is Indigenous Business Month?

This month, we highlight a very special place that many people don't realise is also the main business arm of Gurehlgam.

While we mainly provide much-needed social community services in Kempsey and Grafton, and we regularly advocate for our community and region from Brisbane to Sydney and Canberra, we also have a unique cultural & hospitality business in beautiful Corindi Beach, on Gumbaynggirr Country.

In fact, we could not do what we do without the Yarrawarra Cultural Centre with its Nuralamee Conference and Accommodation Centre, its inspiring Wadjar Art Gallery with gift shop and adjoining Jalumbo heritage museum, and not to forget the on-site Yarrawarra Bush Café on the shady deck, along with the award-winning, artistic Seafoam Cottage for year-round holiday letting next door.

The Wadjar Regional Indigenous Gallery showcases the incredible talent of regional First Nations artists, celebrating stories, culture and creativity through powerful exhibitions and unique artworks. Inside it, our Jalumbo Cultural Heritage Keeping Place displays a vast and precious collection that reflects over 6,000 years of Gumbaynggirr life on the Mid North Coast.

All of this is managed by two dedicated long-term managers: Alison Williams and Bob Palmer, who are supported by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who wow the crowds all year round with their many cultural events and exhibitions. They've all just celebrated the annual ‘Dream On! Music in the Grass Festival’, which was very well received again and a joy for all who attended.

The rest of the year, the team offers a wide range of smaller cultural activities, from bush tucker & medicine walks, traditional weaving, painting, boomerang painting and throwing, ceramics and even traditional cultural healing practices.

During the low seasons (spring - summer), the Nuralamee conference centre, with its many dorm rooms and shared amenities, is rented out each year to large groups of fruit pickers to ensure they have safe, quiet accommodations and cooked meals every day. This in turn provides Yarrawarra with an income to cover expenses. A win-win.

In recent years, we have also received a grant to build a new amenities block, which is now very accessible to people of all abilities ...and very artistic.

Yarrawarra is also an inaugural member of ACHAA NSW and serves as the treasurer of this amazing peak body for arts culture & heritage in NSW.

We thank the whole Gurehlgam team in Corindi Beach, including all volunteers and all the many talented artists (including several of our staff!) who feature their work there, for taking such great care of this special place and for putting their heart and soul into making the Yarrawarra Cultural Centre shine as an Aboriginal-led business.

Thomas Mayo took some time out of his busy schedule yesterday to support our Gurehlgam Gulgihwen men’s group, who also came to the special documentary screening last night.

They talked about his book Dear Son, which is a collection of inspiring and heartfelt letters from well-known Australian fathers to their sons.

They were keen listeners and shared some stories of their own.

Our men’s group is proudly being supported by a generous donation from Bunnings. They now have outdoor work hats and gloves for their gardening / landscaping project.
