Cape York Girl Academy is Australia’s first boarding high school designed for young Indigenous mothers and their babies to live and learn together.

We also have a cohort of young women who are at risk of disengaging with their education.

Today, our Cape York Girls Academy students joined their fellow Djarragun College students for an exciting day of activities at their annual Sports Day event.

The day was filled with energy, teamwork, friendly competition and plenty of school spirit. Our girls embraced every opportunity to get involved, support one another and enjoy being part of the wider school community.

A big congratulations to all students who participated and gave their best throughout the day. We loved seeing the enthusiasm, determination and positive attitudes on display.

Today, Nurse Mel swapped roles and became the patient while Kelly stepped up to learn how to check ears like a pro. ✨

Hands-on learning like this builds confidence and practical skills and inspires our young women to explore careers in health and community care.

We’re so proud to see our girls embracing every opportunity to learn and grow. 💙

Kelly is building skills for the future through her Cert II in Engineering at Cape York Girl Academy ✨

From hands-on workshop experience to classroom learning, she’s gaining confidence, practical knowledge and exploring new pathways for what comes next.

Programs like this create opportunities for young women to step into industries where their ideas, strengths and leadership are needed.

At Girl Academy, it’s about more than gaining qualifications. It’s about backing young women to believe in themselves, grow their capabilities and choose the future they want for themselves, their families and their communities.

Kelly and Deja put in a fantastic effort today in Certificate II in Engineering with Mr Brydon 👏🏽

The girls have been building their skills using the milling machine, learning digital measurements and drilling to the correct depth as part of their metal dice project 🎲

Hands-on learning like this is helping our young women grow in confidence, develop practical skills and explore exciting future pathways in engineering and trades 💛

Last night our girls showed off their team spirit with colourful hairspray and settled in together to watch all the action unfold on the big screen.

From cheering on their teams to sharing laughs and a bit of friendly rivalry, it was a fun, energy-filled night of connection🔥

This National Reconciliation Week, our young women at Cape York Girls Academy are going All In, stepping forward with strength, pride, and purpose 🌿

The theme for NRW 2026 is “All In”, a call for every one of us to commit to reconciliation actions, every day. For our students, this commitment is lived in the classroom, in our boarding house, and in the way we hold culture, family, and future together.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for reflection and action. Our girls are learning, leading, and shaping their own pathways, building the capabilities to choose lives they have reason to value, grounded in who they are and where they come from ✨

Reconciliation grows when their voices are heard, their identities are respected, and their aspirations are supported, and when we choose, daily, to build relationships based on truth, respect, and shared responsibility.

We stand with them, and with communities across Cape York, in this shared work, because a more just nation is built through consistent action over time: listening well, learning honestly, and showing up with care.
