Stormwater Shepherds

Stormwater Shepherds Stormwater Shepherds is an environmental charity committed to restoring health to our waterways.

Our mission is to stop plastic and urban pollution at the source - the home, the business and the stormwater drain, so all lifeforms can enjoy clean water.

Our upcoming clean-up at Powells Creek Reserve's Mangrove Forest in Sydney Olympic Park is sponsored by Atlan Stormwater and supported by Strathfield Council, City of Canada Bay, and Parramatta River Catchment Group.

We invite volunteers and our to come participate in restoring this vital local waterway to protect the mangrove ecosystem from the impacts of urban pollution.

An estimated 40 percent of the world's biodiversity is found in wetlands environments, and Australia is home to 67 wetlands internationally recognised for their ecological, scientific, cultural and recreational value.

During biodiversity month, we draw awareness to the importance of these natural habitats - and the role stormwater treatment can play in ensuring the capture of urban pollutants before they are conveyed to receiving waterways.

Our stormwater network contains vital treatment assets for filtration and pollution capture, which remove a variety of pollutants including nutrient, sediment and heavy metals.

Pollution conveyed by untreated stormwater can have disastrous impacts on downstream waterways and receiving water bodies.

A well-funded and maintained stormwater network ensures better outcomes for our lakes, rivers and seas - and stops pollution at the source in our urban catchments.

Building on the success of last year's event, we invite you to our latest clean-up at Powells Creek Reserve's Mangrove Forest in Sydney Olympic Park. These mangroves are a biodiversity hotspot along the Paramatta River, and we look forward to cleaning the shoreline with all our participants!

Sponsored by Atlan Stormwater and supported by Strathfield Council, City of Canada Bay, and Parramatta River Catchment Group. we look forward to cleaning the shoreline together to preserve this vital local ecosystem and protect Joy in Water for future generations.

Biodiversity Month is an opportunity to celebrate our unique ecosystems and their wealth of native flora and fauna. Australia is abundant in natural habitat flourishing with wildlife, from our pristine wetlands and waterways to ocean and reef environments.

Our mission as Zero Pollution Ambassadors is to preserve these areas and build awareness around the fundamental role of stormwater treatment to protect our downstream environments.

The stormwater sector is a rapidly developing industry, and Stormwater Australia's SQIDEP (Stormwater Quality Improvement Device Evaluation Protocol) helps councils, engineers and developers overcome challenges when it comes to assessing the performance of stormwater devices.

With a growing demand for critical stormwater infrastructure in our local communities, SQIDEP provides a framework to assess the pollution removal capabilities of stormwater assets. Helping save time for decision makers, it helps stakeholders deliver better water quality outcomes for local development.

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is the world's largest coral reef system, and the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan is a combined commitment between the Australian and Queensland governments to support sustainability, resilience and ecosystem health across this iconic marine environment.

Stormwater is the conveyance network for many of the water quality targets listed as part of the plan - which include sediment, dissolved and particulate nitrogen, particulate phosphorus and pesticides.

Untreated stormwater drains convey urban pollution directly to receiving waterways, oceans and lakes, including contaminants like cleaning products, paints and excess fertilizers.

Around the house, non-toxic items can be cleaned over lawns or garden areas that do not runoff into stormwater drainage.

Local waste management centres are also a great place to ask about safe disposal of household chemicals - with many household waste products able to be accepted for resource recovery.

Plastic ingestion has a significant environmental impact on wildlife, including cetaceans, fish, and bird species, which mistake it for a food source.

Plastic Free July is coming to a close - but the call for small steps, big difference can be applied throughout the year to help protect our waterways & oceans. Together, we need to Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, Recycle & Replace.

By applying these strategies year-round, we can minimise our plastic footprint and support circular economies that help to recycle and reuse plastics.

Land-based pollution, otherwise known as terrestrial pollution, is carried by stormwater flows from our urban centres to our waterways and oceans.

'Small steps make a big difference' this Plastic Free July. Together, we can reduce our the pollution in our urban catchments by supporting stormwater awareness and remembering the 5R's - Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, Recycle & REPLACE!

Did you know that Australia only recycles 14% of the plastic we use? Research reveals 130,000 tonnes of plastic enters our marine environment each year - and we can all do our part to Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, Recycle & Replace.

This Plastic Free July we are asking everyone to consider the impacts that plastic use has on our marine and riverine ecosystems. Together, we can form better habits to find alternatives to single use plastics and reduce our plastic footprint.
