“I didn’t want to lose my eye…as an artist, that was my greatest fear, but I didn’t want the cancer to spread.”

Anne Louise never expected an eye check would lead to a diagnosis of ocular melanoma, a rare cancer.

In just weeks, she faced a life-changing decision - remove her eye or risk the cancer spreading.

“It was a huge shock… but speaking with the Melanoma Telehealth Nurse and Nurse Counsellor at Melanoma Patients Australia helped me make sense of my diagnosis and feel connected and supported.”

Now, Anne Louise is finding her way forward - she is grateful to still see and paint again, adapting, and taking each step with courage.

We’re excited to share that the Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA) team is presenting at the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia (CNSA) Annual Congress this year.

Across the next two days, our nurses will be speaking about ways to better support melanoma patients — from improving emotional wellbeing, to managing side effects, to making care more accessible through telehealth.

🧡 What does this mean for you?
It’s all about improving the care and support you receive at every stage of your melanoma journey.
Our team will be sharing work on:
✨ Better supportive care for patients, including those with ocular melanoma
✨ Managing treatment side effects like adrenal insufficiency
✨ Expanding telehealth and counselling services
✨ Strengthening how healthcare teams work together to support you

While this is a professional conference, the conversations happening here are focused on one thing — you, the patient, and how care can continue to improve.

🧡 We’re proud to see our nurses leading these important discussions and advocating for better outcomes for everyone affected by melanoma.

Stay tuned — we’ll share more updates and insights from the congress and in the meantime if you need support, we are here for you:

Maryanne shares how Melanoma Patients Australia’s support groups helped her after a stage IV melanoma diagnosis. Wanting to give back, she then became a peer supporter, connecting with others newly diagnosed.

Through MPA, she built meaningful friendships and found a strong sense of community.

You can, too, explore a support group that suits you, they're in person or online.
