Guest Speaker – Program Manager Lea from Ocean Connect

Today we welcomed Lea from Ocean Connect, who shared the inspiring and important work their organisation has been undertaking since 2013 to help communities better understand and connect with our local marine environment.

Funded through grants and community support, Ocean Connect combines scientific research, community participation and local knowledge to collect valuable environmental data and promote stewardship of our coastal ecosystems.

Their work includes monitoring seagrass meadows throughout locations such as South Stradbroke Island, Tallebudgera Creek and Currumbin Creek. These surveys help researchers understand the impacts of climate change, severe weather events and cyclones on our coastal environments.

Members were fascinated to learn that seagrass meadows are a critical food source for dugongs, with an adult dugong consuming up to 40 kilograms of seagrass each day. The health of these underwater ecosystems is therefore vital to the survival of many marine species.

Ocean Connect also undertakes sea slug and sea hare surveys, using these species as indicators of reef and ecosystem health. Different species feed on different marine plants and organisms, providing researchers with valuable insights into the overall condition of local waterways and marine habitats.

Thank you, Lea, for providing such an engaging presentation and for highlighting the important role science, community involvement and environmental stewardship play in protecting the natural assets we are fortunate to enjoy on the Gold Coast.

🌏🇹🇼 Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads represented on the world stage in Taipei!

We are incredibly proud to share that our very own Past District Governor Ana Andy Rajapakse will be taking to the international stage at the Rotary International Convention in Taipei, Taiwan.

On 16 June at 2:00pm, Andy will join three incoming Rotary International Board Directors in a special breakout session titled “Forming Innovative New Clubs”, sharing insights, ideas and practical strategies for growing Rotary and engaging new generations of members around the world.

This is a remarkable achievement and recognition of Andy’s leadership, innovation and commitment to Rotary, not only within Australia but across the global Rotary network.

Adding to the Burleigh Heads presence at the convention, we are also delighted that our esteemed Club Treasurer, Rotarian Cooper will be attending and representing our club amongst thousands of Rotarians from across the globe.

The Rotary International Convention is one of the largest gatherings of community leaders and changemakers in the world, bringing together members from more than 200 countries and geographical regions to celebrate service, friendship and the power of creating positive change.

Congratulations Andy and Michael. We know you will make our club, district and community proud.

There are some organisations that quietly go about changing lives every single day, and Walk With Us is one of them.

This week, the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads was proud to present a $1,000 donation to support the incredible work being led by Nikki Luke and her dedicated team of volunteers.

Many in our community will know Nikki as a recent recipient of our Pride of Workmanship Award, recognised for her unwavering commitment to helping those doing it tough. Through Walk With Us, she and her volunteers provide far more than a meal. They provide dignity, connection, hope and support when it is needed most.

Every week, Walk With Us serves three-course meals to people experiencing homelessness, financial hardship and social isolation. In today’s cost-of-living crisis, many families are finding it increasingly difficult to put food on the table, and this organisation is helping to bridge that gap.

Their impact doesn’t stop there. They also support school breakfast programs, helping address the reality that many children start the school day without a nutritious meal. Through food hampers, community partnerships and practical assistance, they continue to make a genuine difference across the Gold Coast.

Working alongside organisations such as OzHarvest and Orange Sky, their volunteer-driven model is remarkable. No one is paid. No one takes a share. Every dollar, every donation and every grant goes back into supporting the community and extending their reach.

We are honoured to support such a worthy cause and thank Nikki and her volunteers for the compassion, kindness and dedication they show every day.

Together, we can continue to make a difference, one meal, one family and one act of kindness at a time.

Another successful day of sizzling at Bunnings and one of Rotary’s biggest opportunities to connect with the local community while raising vital funds for causes that make a real difference.

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers who gave their time to help make the day a success, and to everyone who stopped by for a sausage sandwich, a chat and their support.

Funds raised through events like these help Rotary support important initiatives including our Mobility Scooter Program, the End Polio Now campaign, and a range of local organisations and community causes across our region.

Every sausage sold helps us continue serving our community and supporting those who need it most.

What an inspiring display of youth leadership at yesterday’s District Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) 2026 at the Tweed Heads Council Chambers.

Twenty-three high schools took part, with teams representing 23 nations and debating four international resolutions throughout the day.

A big thank you to our Rotary volunteers, including Rob Haines and PDG Ross Smith , who served as judges and saw firsthand the exceptional talent on display. Students demonstrated impressive research, public speaking, diplomacy and critical thinking skills.

As one of Rotary’s flagship youth programs, MUNA helps students build leadership, confidence and a deeper understanding of global issues.

Congratulations to all the students, teachers, organisers and volunteers who made the event such a success. The future is in very capable hands.

A huge thank you also to Leanne Cohens from the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce for delivering such an inspiring and grounded presentation about small business, people and community leadership.

Nights like this are a reminder that strong communities are built by ordinary people doing extraordinary things consistently over time — and we are incredibly fortunate to have so many of them right here on the Gold Coast.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported and helped celebrate these deserving individuals. More photos to come! 📸

The Pride of Work Awards are one of the most rewarding service initiatives our Rotary Club delivers each year because they give us the chance to recognise people who simply get in, work hard and consistently show pride in what they do.

It was a pleasure to recognise Cody Abbott Martin from Gold Coast Tyre & Auto at this year’s awards.

Starting as an apprentice from Marymount College and now celebrating 10 years of loyal service, Cody has built a reputation for being hardworking, reliable and committed to both his team and customers. In an industry where trust and consistency matter, Cody continues to lead by example through his work ethic and dedication.

People like Cody are the backbone of local business and community.

Congratulations Cody — a very deserving recipient and someone your workplace should be incredibly proud of. 👏

There are some people in our community who give so much of themselves to others, not for recognition, but simply because they care deeply about making a difference.

That is exactly why the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads hosts the Pride of Work Awards each year — to stop for a moment and acknowledge the people who are changing lives through dedication, kindness and commitment.

It was such a pleasure to recognise Bryce Francis from Youth Music Venture. Bryce has spent years mentoring and supporting young people through music, helping them build confidence, connection and belief in themselves.

Unfortunately, Bryce was unable to attend the awards night because he was doing exactly what he does best — delivering a school musical and inspiring young people through the arts. His award was proudly accepted on his behalf by his nominator, Ian Grace.

What stood out to me most was not only Bryce’s talent and leadership, but the countless volunteer hours he gives behind the scenes while also balancing a full-time teaching career. People like Bryce are helping shape the next generation in the most positive way possible.

A very deserving recipient and an outstanding human. 🎶

Some people don’t just support the community — they become the heart of it.

The Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads was incredibly proud to recognise Nikki Luke from Walk With Us through our 2026 Pride of Work Awards.

Nikki has dedicated years of her life to supporting some of the most vulnerable people across our community with compassion, dignity and absolutely no judgement. Whether it’s organising meals, supporting people through crisis, checking in on someone doing it tough or simply making people feel seen and valued — Nikki leads with genuine care.

In a world where many people walk past hardship, Nikki walks towards it with kindness and action.

It was an honour for our club to acknowledge someone who truly embodies service above self in every sense of the words. 💜

As someone who has worked in both education and community leadership, I know firsthand the impact a great educator can have on the lives of young people.

The Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads was proud to recognise Tiffany Grant from Miami State High School through our 2026 Pride of Work Awards.

Tiffany was recognised for her dedication, professionalism and the genuine care she shows towards her students every day. Creating a supportive learning environment where young people feel encouraged, valued and capable of succeeding is no small task — yet it is something Tiffany consistently delivers.

Teachers play such an important role in shaping confidence, resilience and future opportunities for our young people, and Tiffany’s passion for helping students grow truly stood out to our club.

Congratulations Tiffany on this very well-deserved recognition. 🌟
