Huge respect to the team at Sea Flower Foundation. The cages they set up years ago in the Mentawais are now covered in coral — and some of it grew there entirely on its own 🐠🌊

Hey the coral survey guys came today it went really good! There going to give us permit for 4 hectares!
He said he wasn’t sure, before he came whether he was going to give us permits or not. But when he saw what we did in the area with the reefs we built and the condition of the area now! that there used to be healthy corals in the area probably 20 years ago. now all just old coral skeletons. Also what we planted,and a lot of baby corals sprouting up everywhere from our old gardens. He said ya perfect zone for coral restoration!👍

Hari ini tim terumbu karang datang untuk memeriksa lokasi kami — dan hasilnya sangat bagus.
Mereka mengatakan akan memberikan izin untuk restorasi terumbu karang seluas 4 hektare. Sebelum datang, dia bahkan belum yakin apakah akan memberi izin atau tidak. Tapi setelah melihat sendiri apa yang sudah terjadi di sini — terumbu yang kami bangun, perubahan kondisi area, dan bagaimana lokasi yang dulu punya terumbu sehat 20 tahun lalu tapi sekarang hanya tinggal kerangka karang mulai hidup kembali — pandangannya langsung berubah.
Dia berjalan di antara kebun karang kami, melihat karang yang sudah kami tanam, dan banyak bayi karang baru yang tumbuh dari kebun lama kami, lalu berkata: “Ya, ini zona yang sempurna untuk restorasi terumbu karang.”
Bentangan terumbu di Kepulauan Mentawai ini telah kehilangan tutupan karang selama 20 tahun terakhir — sekarang resmi diakui sebagai zona restorasi.
Momen seperti ini membuat kami sangat bangga dan bersyukur. Bangga dengan kerja keras di lapangan, dan bersyukur kepada orang‑orang yang mau melihat lebih dekat, mendengarkan, dan mendukung restorasi terumbu karang secara nyata.
4 hektare. Saatnya bekerja. Yeeew! 🌊🌱

🌊 I fell in love with reefs long before I knew how to fix them.
Every dive, every tiny coral, every fish school reminded me what we stand to lose if we don’t act.
This 30‑second clip is a small glimpse into why I pour my time, energy, and heart into supporting Sea Flower Foundation – rebuilding damaged coral ecosystems and protecting the islands that feel like home.

We’re at a massive milestone for Yayasan Selat Bunga Laut Sea Flower Foundation— our reef restoration zone off Pulau Pittojat in the Mentawai Islands is about to become officially protected.
Here’s what that actually costs:
📍 $2,007 AUD — Survey team (3 specialists including a diver) to officially map and coordinate our 2.47 hectare reef zone
🌊 ~$6,200 AUD — The 30-year government permit to legally protect the area under Indonesian law
That’s less than $8,300 to lock in reef protection for 30 years. For 2.47 hectares of living ocean.
No wages. No admin fees. Every cent goes directly to getting this reef the legal protection it needs to survive.
The permits are moving. The survey team is ready. We just need to get this funded.

The ocean gives us everything — waves, food, livelihoods, communities, even the air we breathe. So sitting back and doing nothing isn’t something I can accept.
With only a tiny fraction of the ocean studied, protecting it should be the obvious choice. Human impacts are the biggest threat, and I believe education is the most powerful tool we have to change that.
Here’s where I’m putting my energy:
reefconservation.earth will be my educational page — telling the story of our reef work in Sumatra from my own perspective. Follow along to see what’s happening on the ground through my eyes, the personal side and behind-the-scenes moments that won’t appear on the foundation page.
seaflowerfoundation.com is the foundation I’m now heavily involved with. We’re focused on getting it properly established and starting to build reefs. My core goal is to educate local villages, work with them, and hopefully employ them to help us year-round.
I’m based on the Gold Coast but planning multiple trips a year to do as much as I can. This has been 100% self-funded — generously supported by Togat Nusa Retreat, and every trip I’ve personally paid all my own expenses, including paying staff to run my business back home while I’m away.
If you want to support us, even the price of a coffee helps get this off the ground. Or just share our content — getting more eyes on this work is just as valuable.

Kepulauan Mentawai sudah memberi begitu banyak untuk saya – dari terumbu karang yang luar biasa sampai inspirasi yang mengubah hidup – jadi saya merasa punya tanggung jawab untuk ikut menjaga. Saya bangga mendukung Sea Flower Foundation (Yayasan Selat Bunga Laut), tim lokal yang memulihkan terumbu karang, melindungi garis pantai, dan menguatkan masyarakat di tempat istimewa ini.
Bersama‑sama kami membangun pembibitan karang, memasang struktur terumbu, dan berbagi ilmu tentang terumbu dengan sekolah, komunitas selancar, dan para pengunjung supaya laut tetap hidup untuk generasi berikutnya. So many fish have moved into the ring reef. Lots of nooks and crannies to hide in . Loving the new home. Corals have begun settling on this structure. 🪸❤️🙌
