🌊 Reefs are more than beauty — they’re island protectors.
Our latest animated video shows what happens when reefs fade: waves hit harder, shores wash away, and erosion begins.
Restoring reefs means saving the islands we love. 💙🌺

🌊 Protecting Our Reefs, Protecting Our Islands
Every coral reef saved is one step closer to a stronger, more resilient planet. Our passion for reef conservation comes from seeing firsthand how these beautiful ecosystems protect island communities — acting as natural barriers that absorb wave energy and shield coastlines.
In our latest animated video, it shows how reef damage changes everything: as coral breaks down, more wave power hits the shore, washing away precious sand and soil. Without healthy reefs, erosion accelerates — and what was once paradise slowly disappears beneath the waves.
By restoring the reefs, we restore balance. Together, we can keep the islands standing strong. 🌺💙

Setiap dukungan sangat berarti.

The Mentawai Islands have given me so much – from world‑class reefs to life‑changing inspiration – and I feel a deep responsibility to give something back. I’m proud to support Sea Flower Foundation (Yayasan Selat Bunga Laut), a local team restoring coral reefs, protecting coastlines, and empowering communities in this special place.
Together we’re building coral nurseries, installing reef structures, and sharing reef knowledge with schools, surf communities, and visitors so the ocean can stay alive for future generations. If you care about healthy reefs, food security for villages, and protecting this island paradise, please follow, share, and support in any way you can. Every bit of awareness helps.

So many fish have moved into the ring reef. Lots of nooks and crannies to hide in . Loving the new home. Corals have begun settling on this structure. 🪸❤️🙌

Yes this kind of thing gives so much joy. Dry concrete used to build reefs. The base for a stunning actopora . You can see the rebar coming out the side . As that corrodes it releases iron . The symbiotic algae inside the coral loves a bit of iron 😬. And the cement was made with a coral sand mix . So naturally this is perfect substrate to grow strong corals on. Just wasn’t planned to grow it on this bit 😬.

Diversity and insane fish support system. Filtering water heading to pristine coral reefs. ❤️🫶 love the video .

World Seagrass Day might have been Sunday, but these quiet underwater meadows deserve attention every day.
Seagrass isn’t seaweed – it’s a flowering plant that carpets shallow bays, holding sand in place, calming waves, and helping protect our coasts from erosion. It also acts as a nursery for countless juvenile fish, crabs, and prawns, many of which later move out onto nearby coral reefs and into local fisheries.
When we lose seagrass, we don’t just lose a habitat – we lose natural coastal protection, reef support, and food and income for coastal communities.
Even though I missed World Seagrass Day, I still want to celebrate these underwater heroes and keep them on the conservation agenda. Protect the seagrass, and you’re also protecting the reef and the people who depend on it. 💙

This is a piece of cement left over from part of one of the accomodation builds on the island.
In 2023 John put this onto the artificial reefs to help weigh it down. In August 2025 it looked like this. Bare cement to coral ❤️

Our reef modules are doing their job. 🧱
In the middle of a rubble zone, they’re already packed with fish using every hole and shadow as shelter and hunting ground.
