Funny! My Australian, via Nova Scotia, Cogills don’t use the H as our Caithness cousins do. The pronunciation is the same. The name of this page should be Cogill/Coghill/Coggill/Cogle Family Caithness!

Co Gill

Recently the results from my Queensland Family’s BigY DNA test links us to an Ancient Coghill Caithness family who can trace their family to the 1600s and possibly further! Cogill of that Ilk.

Would love to hear from any family and I plan to return to Caithness in 2027.

Truly ancient area.

BigYDNA between my Cogill Australian family and Caithness Coghill has come back positive!

Our ancestor Daniel Cogill, Grenadier, 2nd Battalion Fraser Highlanders was granted land in Guysborough, Nova Scotia for his service in the American Revolution. How he actually got to America is not documented. All we have is records of him as a POW in NY and a will of a nearest of kin William Cogill describing him as Daniel Cogill, 71st Regiment.

Does anyone has any information re the British enlistments for this period?

Cogle/Cogill Mill believed to be built in 1600s. The middle section without the roof is the Cogle section. Evidence of the mill wheel can be seen on the back wall and also another one on the side. The mill started as undershot mill and was converted to an overshot mill. The mill is on the original Cogle of the Ilk farm near Watten, Caithness. The date is reported to be on the front stones.

Searching for information re Ancestor Daniel Cogill/Cogil/Coggill/Cogle/Cougal, Grenadier, 2nd Battalion, 71st Regiment Fraser Highlanders. He fought for British and was a POW in the American Revolution. Facts we can verify. Facts we can verify; died and was buried in the Guysborough Christ Church Cemetery 3 Oct 1795, aged near to 60 years therefore yob 1755 married Margaret Graham and had 8 children - Katherine/Cathrine born between 1780- 1785, John born between 1780 - 1790, William born between 1780-1785, Ann 1786, Margaret 1788, Alexander 1790, Ann 1793 and Daniel 1794, military discharge records for the above, numerous deeds for soldier land grants in Guysborough, A will for a William Cogill/Cogill stating Daniel was in the 71st, and was his nearest of kin. (This William’s Navy records, from American Revolution, indicates he was born in Inverness, Scotland.) We do not have any verification that Daniel Cogill, 71st was born in Scotland however the naming/names of his children, the fact he was in the Fraser Highlanders and nearest of kin was born in Inverness indicate the Scottish link.
Most Scotland records for Cogills appear to be in Caithness for this period. Several suggested family links exist. I look forward to any information regarding our family. Many links through the names above.
