Every day across Australia, communities are stepping up to make a real difference for the environment — and Watergum is proud to help make that happen.

From restoring habitat and monitoring wildlife to empowering volunteers and supporting citizen science, our work is all about giving people the opportunity to jump in on the action and create meaningful environmental impact in their own communities.

This End of Financial Year, we are asking for your support to help us continue delivering practical, on-ground conservation programs that protect wildlife, restore ecosystems and inspire communities to take action for nature.

Your donation will help support:
🌿 Habitat restoration projects
🐢 Turtle conservation
🦆 Platypus and waterway monitoring
📡 Community science and environmental programs
🤝 Volunteer engagement and education initiatives

Every contribution helps Watergum continue creating opportunities for communities across Australia to be part of the solution.

Donate here: https://watergum.org/donate/

All donations over $2 are tax deductible before June 30.

At Watergum, every day is a chance to take action for the environment, but World Environment Day is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together when communities step up for nature.

This year, we’re celebrating the hands-on work happening across our programs to protect and restore local ecosystems, including:

🐢 Citizen science programs
Our citizen science initiatives are at the heart of what we do — including TurtleWatch, PlatypusWatch, and water quality monitoring programs. These projects empower the community to collect vital data that informs conservation efforts and helps protect iconic native species and freshwater ecosystems.

🌿 Land management & restoration
We work directly with landholders to improve land condition, reduce erosion, and manage invasive plants, helping to strengthen the health and resilience of local ecosystems.

🚁 Drone & environmental monitoring
We use drone technology and field monitoring to assess habitat condition, track environmental change, and support restoration planning, helping guide effective on-ground conservation work.

🐸 Invasive species management
Community-led programs tackling invasive species and reducing their impact on native wildlife across our landscapes.

🎓 Environmental education & workshops
We support communities with hands-on learning opportunities, building knowledge and skills to take meaningful action for the environment.

Every survey completed, species recorded, tree planted and conversation started helps build a better understanding of our natural world and how to take action to protect it.

We are incredibly proud of our ongoing partnership with Somerset College and the opportunity to support hands-on environmental learning experiences right on their campus 🌿💧

Recently, Prep students joined the Watergum team to undertake a Waterbug Survey within the creek system, Wyangan Creek, that runs through the school grounds. By collecting and identifying waterbugs, students discovered how these tiny creatures can provide important insights into water quality and ecosystem health.

Programs like this help bring environmental education to life, connecting students directly with the natural environment around them while building curiosity, confidence and a deeper understanding of conservation from an early age.

A huge thank you to Somerset College for continuing to host and support these meaningful citizen science experiences through our strong and valued partnership.

We’re excited to share a recent collaboration between Watergum and Scenic Rim Regional Council, taking koala conservation into the skies over Kooralbyn 🌿

This project uses drone technology fitted with a thermal camera to detect heat signatures in the landscape, helping us safely survey for koalas in their natural habitat. By picking up body heat from above, we’re able to locate koalas that would otherwise be difficult to spot from the ground 🌳🌡️

The aim is simple: to improve our understanding of koala presence and distribution in the area, and help inform future conservation efforts and habitat protection across the Scenic Rim.

Surveys are carried out in the cooler months, when temperature differences allow koalas to stand out more clearly on thermal imagery — making the technology even more effective in supporting wildlife monitoring 🚁💚

Watergum is surveying nine sites across Kooralbyn to contribute valuable data to local koala population databases. This work follows on from the Scenic Rim 2024 Koala Population Study, where koala s**t was collected and analysed to assess genetics, health, diet, and the presence of diseases such as Chlamydia.

Final surveys are currently being completed, and we look forward to sharing the results once they are ready.

A new view of an iconic species, and another step toward better understanding and protecting them 🐨

We’d love to know where koalas are popping up across our region 🐨🌿

Koala sightings help us build a clearer picture of how koalas are moving through our landscapes, especially in urban and peri-urban areas where habitat is increasingly fragmented. Every observation adds to our understanding of where koalas are persisting, travelling, and how they’re interacting with their environment.

If you spot a koala, we encourage you to log your sighting through the City of Gold Coast Koala Sighting Report form. These community records are incredibly valuable for conservation planning and help inform efforts to protect and connect koala habitat across the region.

Your sightings make a real difference, thank you for helping us look out for one of Australia’s most iconic species 💚

Healthy waterways are essential to healthy ecosystems, and that’s exactly what our Water Monitoring Gold Coast program is all about. 💧🌿

Watergum staff undertake quarterly testing of key water quality parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, and temperature. These indicators provide vital insight into the health of aquatic environments and the species that depend on them.

The data collected through our Water Monitoring program is shared with the City of Gold Coast, helping inform decision-makers about the condition of local ecosystems and wildlife.

By collating data over multiple years, we’re able to identify long-term trends, detect anomalies, and better understand changes that may impact our natural environment.

If you would like to volunteer your time as a Water Quality Coordinator, please let us know, we’d love to hear from you!

There’s an exciting long-term restoration program underway along Mudgeeraba Creek! 🌿

In a project led by Austinville Landcare and made possible through funding from Ros Bates and the Department of Tourism, Science and Innovation, these works focus on restoring creek vegetation to improve the health and functionality of the waterway.

Creek vegetation plays a vital role in stabilising banks, managing water flow and helping to redirect floodwaters during major rainfall events. Healthy, well-vegetated banks support deeper and more stable creek channels, allowing most debris to move naturally through the system while still retaining some logs and organic matter that provide important habitat for aquatic and riparian species. Together, these processes help maintain a balanced ecosystem and contribute to a healthier, more resilient and naturally self-sustaining creek system.

Over the next three years, the project will roll out a series of community events, including creek clean-ups, native tree plantings, and guided walk-and-talks. These events will bring the community into the space to get hands-on in caring for the creek, while learning more about the role healthy waterways and native habitat play in supporting local waterways. The first community event is coming up soon:

Today we celebrate World Dugong Day!

Dugongs are truly unique marine mammals. They spend their lives grazing slowly across seagrass meadows, helping to keep these underwater ecosystems healthy and balanced. But their slow breeding rate and dependence on fragile habitats make them especially vulnerable to threats like seagrass loss, boat strikes, and entanglement in fishing gear.

At Watergum, we’re helping protect dugongs through community-led action and citizen science. We’ve collaborated with Dugong Sightings Gold Coast to encourage people to report sightings that help us better understand where dugongs are moving and how to can protect their habitat.

This data is shared with relevant governing bodies to support research and guide conservation actions that help protect these incredible animals.

If you see a dugong, report it to help protect this incredible species for generations to come!
