Today is Thank a First Responder Day 🚑🚓🚒

First responders are often the first on the scene during emergencies, accidents, disasters, and crises. Their work can be intense, unpredictable, and emotionally demanding, yet they continue to step forward with courage and compassion.

Today is a chance to pause and say thank you to the paramedics, firefighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and volunteers who dedicate their lives to keeping communities safe.

💙 If you know a first responder, consider sending a message of appreciation.
💙 Share a word of thanks online.
💙 Take a moment to recognise the impact their work has on our communities.

To all first responders: your service matters, and your dedication does not go unnoticed. Thank you from Bravehearts.

For young people, it’s now harder to avoid po*******hy than to see it.

If your child has access to a mobile phone, laptop, tablet or any other internet-enabled device, or if they have any friends or siblings that do, then it is very likely that they will see po*******hy, even if they never seek it out.

Po*******hy’s influence poses many challenges for young people, for the adults who live or work with them and for society in general. How can you support your child to navigate this new reality and to develop relationships and sexuality that are healthy, safe and respectful?

Together, we are helping create safer futures for children.

🌳The Healing Power of Nature: How Connecting with the Natural World Can Support Trauma Recovery 🍃

Across cultures and generations, people have turned to the natural world for comfort, grounding, and restoration.

In celebration of World Environment Day, let’s reflect on how connecting with nature can play a meaningful role in supporting emotional recovery after trauma, for adults and children alike.

Today we celebrate Mabo Day, which commemorates the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo and marks the anniversary of the historic 1992 Mabo decision.

Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander man who challenged the claim that his family’s traditional land was owned by the Crown. The High Court’s decision in Mabo v Queensland overturned that claim and set a precedent in Australian law for the recognition of Indigenous custodianship over their traditional land.

The decision also overturned the colonial concept of terra nullius, Latin for ‘nobody’s land’. At the time of European settlement of Australia, terra nullius was used to justify the British Crown’s claim on the land, as though it was previously unoccupied territory.

Sadly, Eddie Mabo died several months before the decision was handed down, though his legacy lives on.

Ditto's Keep Safe Adventure is Bravehearts’ fun and effective personal safety education program that helps children recognise, react and report when they feel unsafe.

🤔 What is personal safety education?

Personal safety education (also known as protective behaviours education) empowers children with the knowledge and skills to recognise unsafe situations, establish personal boundaries, and seek help when they feel unsafe or unsure.

Personal safety is a vital extension of the safety rules and concepts we teach children, such as road safety, fire safety and sun safety.

Whilst the onus of protection should never be on the child, helping children to understand boundaries, identify their body parts, recognise when something doesn’t feel right or safe, and to talk to a trusted adult without fear of consequences, can add a vital layer of protection around children.

The concepts that underpin personal safety education promote safety of self against all forms of child abuse, in particular, child sexual abuse.

When a child discloses sexual abuse, a family’s world can shatter in an instant.

What comes next is often overwhelming - navigating police, child safety services, the legal system… all while trying to support a traumatised child.

No family should have to face this alone.

This EOFY, your donation could help fund a Child and Family Advocate - someone who walks beside families, helping them take each step forward.

Please give before June 30 and be the support they desperately need.
