🎼 Monday Music Minute 🎼

Philharmonic Orchestra. Symphony Orchestra.

You've probably heard both names before—but did you know they're usually the same type of orchestra?

The difference isn't in the instruments or the size of the ensemble. More often, it's a matter of history, tradition, or simply helping distinguish one orchestra from another.

So while we're the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra, you'll still hear the full symphonic sound you know and love. 🎻🎺🥁

What's an orchestra question you've always wondered about? Let us know in the comments and it might feature in a future Monday Music Minute!

Monday Music Minute 🎶

Most people think timpani are simply giant drums used for dramatic effects.

But each timpani is carefully tuned to a specific pitch, and the player can even change notes during a performance using the foot pedals.

That means timpani don't just provide rhythm—they contribute to the harmony of the orchestra too.

Next time you're at a GCPO concert, keep an eye on the timpanist's feet as well as their hands 👀🥁

Under the stars and against the sparkling Gold Coast skyline, our musicians brought some of cinema's most iconic soundtracks to life at Symphony in the Sky. From powerful orchestral moments to unforgettable movie music, it was an evening filled with elegance, energy, and community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special black-tie event and helped create such a magical atmosphere. We are proud to have been part of an evening supporting an important cause while sharing the joy of live orchestral music.

Introducing Elysia Li, Soloist

Xinyi (Elysia) Li started learning piano before the age of 5. After a few years, she took piano more seriously and developed a strong passion for it. At the age of 11, Elysia decided to study piano performance for her university degree and hopefully become a concert pianist. In July 2022, Elysia participated the 4th Franz Liszt International Youth Piano Competition in China and achieved 3rd prize in Beijing. Elysia is now 16 and living in Brisbane. Since 2024, has participated many competitions such as the 2024 Sydney Eisteddfod and the 2024 Queensland Piano Competition. In 2025, she won second place in the Redlands Eisteddfod 15-18 years solo category and won a first place and a third place at the Enoggera Eisteddfod. She has also participated the Steinway Online National Piano Competition and frequently records her playing. Other than being a soloist, she has also participated in many chamber music ensembles. Last year, she played Ubi Caritas and Dimitri Shostakovich’s second waltz with her school chamber orchestra at St John’s Cathedral.

Now at just 16, Elysia is sharing our stage and performing Greig’s Piano Concerto in A Minor.

The Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra is passionate about fostering young musicians, and we are very proud to be a part of Elysia’s musical journey.
