Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation

Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation The Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation funds key medical research that aims to find a cure for spinal injuries.

Perry established the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation in 2010 to fill a gap left by the passing of Christopher Reeve, to raise funds to find a cure for paralysis.
“When Christopher Reeve passed away we lost a friend and also our spokesperson, our figurehead. That was my inspiration to start the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation.” - Perry Cross
The Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation

was formed out of a need to have someone who was willing to speak out and remind the public about the usually-hidden cause of people suffering paraplegia and quadriplegia.

It is always a pleasure to catch up with Foundation Patron The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO.

During our recent meeting, I had the opportunity to share the latest news on the groundbreaking clinical trial, hear her insightful words of wisdom, and learn from her wealth of experience. Her ongoing support, encouragement and genuine interest in our mission are greatly valued.

I always leave these conversations inspired and grateful, and I look forward to our next catch-up.

Something remarkable is happening right now.

The world-first Nerve Bridge Transplantation and Rehabilitation Human Clinical Trial, the research Perry Cross has spent decades fighting for, is on the cusp of beginning.

Dr Mariyam Murtaza, senior researcher, recently shared this update directly with Perry:

"Most elements are now in place to commence the trial... We remain on track and hope to be ready to receive the first participant's cells very soon."

This is the moment the Foundation has been working towards. The best research team in the world. The science moving at a pace Perry has only dreamed of.

But research doesn't stop. And neither can we.

This EOFY, your tax-deductible gift helps keep the momentum going. All the way to the breakthrough.

His name is Dan. He has cared for Perry Cross for 8 years.

From the moment Perry wakes up at 5:30am, to the time he closes his eyes at night, Dan is there. He organises the whole day. He makes sure everything runs smoothly, that Perry is comfortable, on time, and surrounded by people who love him.

Dan put it simply:

"We find the positive and what's possible, rather than what we can't do."

But Dan also said this:

"I wish I could ease the burden of how hard this thing is."

There are things that no amount of care can fix. No perfectly organised day. No amount of love and dedication changes the reality Perry lives with every single day.

Only a treatment can do that.

This tax time, your gift can help fund the world-class research to find that treatment.

People often assume Perry Cross wants most to walk again. To run. To dance.

And those things matter. Of course they do.

But Perry has described something much simpler that he longs for.

In his own words:

"Motor function is different, because mobility is sort of easy, you can make up for lost function with a wheelchair. But with sensory function, you can't make up for it. I don't feel anyone when they shake my hand, or touch me on the shoulder, or even give me a hug. I don't feel anything. It would be incredible to regain touch."

That's what a treatment for paralysis would give back, not just to Perry, but to thousands of people who just want to hug their loved ones once more.

This is why the work matters. This is why we keep going.

Western Sydney University are running a research study to improve the Train the Trainer – Spinal Cord Injury (T3‑SCI) program, designed to help exercise professionals support people with spinal cord injuries in community gyms.

What’s involved:

✨Attend a 2‑hour workshop (face‑to‑face or online)
✨Complete a short 15–20 min survey
✨Receive a $100 e‑gift voucher for participating

Every morning, before Perry Cross can have a coffee or join a meeting, his team goes through a daily routine together.

It takes time. It takes a team. And Perry has been doing it every day for more than 30 years.

In Perry's own words:

"I don't tell you this for sympathy. I tell you because I want you to understand what drives me. I get up every day with one purpose: to make sure we do everything we can to find a treatment for paralysis."

And right now, after more than three decades, the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation is closer than it has ever been.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing more of that story with you. Because we need your help to keep going.

Mind-blown! That’s the only way to describe how our team felt after our recent lecture session with the brilliant minds at Griffith University! 🤯✨

The Foundation team, our Cure Crusader Ambassadors, and Genny & Jim from Making Strides sat down with Dr Ronak Reshamwala and Dr Francesca Oieni from the Spinal Injury Project (SIP) team for a fascinating presentation about the spinal cord.

We took a deep dive into the incredible anatomy of the human body, learning about:

🧠 How the brain and spinal cord work together as a master control system.

💥 What happens biologically when a traumatic injury occurs.

🌉 The revolutionary role of nerve bridges in helping to repair damaged tissue.

It was an eye-opening session packed with "wow" moments and great questions. A massive thank you to Dr Ronak Reshamwala for sharing his expertise and giving us a glimpse into the groundbreaking work they are doing to repair the spinal cord.
