*Bee Aware Kids workshops back on* Hi to all of our Bee Aware Kids followers! It has been a long time since we've posted anything. In fact this is my first time logging in for a long time... Sorry! We just wanted to let you all know that after a bit of an extended period of not running kids native bee workshops, we're getting back into it. To begin with we have limited availability, but gradually availability will pick up. To get in touch head over to our website www.beeawarekids.com.au Here's a female great carpenter bee having a drink of nectar for your Friday ☺️

Schools with stingless bee hive/s, here is a way you can be directly involved in stingless bee science. The University of Queensland has a citizen science project that involves citizens with access to stingless bee hives making weekly 3 minute observations of bee activity at their hive entrance. The project aims to shed light on the secretive process of colony-level reproduction in stingless bees. Learn all about the project and how to participate here (https://biological-sciences.uq.edu.au/engagement/native-bee-citizen-science-project). There are a few great instructional videos too, that provide great stingless bee learning regardless of whether you are able to participate in the project or not.

Looking for information on native plants to grow to help native bees, or instructions on how to build bee hotels? Download this free PDF booklet published by City of Gold Coast Council (https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/files/sharedassets/public/pdfs/environment/backyard-biodiversity-our-nature-native-bees.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3HuzmPGajVwYsCY1B5bvA7ba_dYnwcB7Dv4p1CmN3H7aFpvd6e1VO4mJQ). The booklet also includes information about the native bee species that are found on the Gold Coast. The booklet was written by Bee Aware Kids' very own Dr Toby along with and Council botanists. If you live on the Gold Coast you can also pick up free printed copies in Council libraries. Go plant some native plants for native bees :)

Who has noticed less activity at their stingless bee hive over the past week or so? We’ve had a few schools get in touch with us in recent days worried that they’d seen a sudden lack of bees at their bee hive’s entrance. Well, not to worry, the bees are just cold and sensibly choosing not to come outside until it warms up. Our stingless bees won’t leave the bee hive unless the temperature is over 18–20 degrees. You will have also noticed they’re starting to fly later in the day on the sunny warmer days too, after the cold nights. It’s all part of their normal yearly cycle. Wait for some relatively warm, sunny days, and have a look in the middle of the day. They’ll be back out foraging again as soon as they can.
