For the Wulgurukaba people of Magnetic Island, the curlew is a warning bird. For the Tiwi people, its cry is Wayai, a mother grieving her son. Next time you hear one at night, listen with respect.

Halloween wildlife safety
Please do not use fake spider webs.
Those stretchy white decorations look harmless, but they are a real hazard for Australian wildlife. Halloween falls in spring, right in the middle of nesting season, so birds are out collecting material and feeding young.
Birds, microbats, insects and pets can become tangled in the fibres. Wings, feet and mouths get wrapped, and animals can die from strangulation, exhaustion or restricted blood flow. Small species are hit hardest: fairy-wrens, finches, honeyeaters and microbats.
Birds also cannot tell the plastic from real spider silk. They carry strands back to the nest. Chicks’ feet get caught as they grow, they cannot leave the nest, and they perish. Wildlife rescuers, including us, have taken calls for birds caught in Halloween decorations, including a kookaburra in a Sydney yard and a honeyeater in Broken Hill.
Some councils can fine this too. Marion Council in Adelaide has warned of fines of more than $300 when artificial webs are left on public land such as footpaths, verges, trees or fences. The rule does not cover every private yard, but the risk to wildlife is the same wherever the webs are hung.
Skip the plastic. Pumpkins, leaves, twigs and reusable decorations do the job without the harm. Take everything down as soon as Halloween is over so nothing blows into parks or trees.
And keep the chocolate and lollies up high. Dogs end up at the vet every Halloween after getting into the goodies.
From all of us at Aussie Wildlife Limited, have a safe and happy Halloween.
