Living alongside wildlife comes with responsibilities. Just as we want to protect our domestic animals, we must also understand and respect the wildlife that shares our environment.
So, what can we do differently?
🖤Keep domestic pets safely secured in suitable enclosures, particularly at night.
🖤Never feed, lure or deliberately encourage wild dingoes to approach people or homes.
🖤Give dingoes space and learn how to respond calmly and appropriately if one approaches.
🖤Help visitors and tourists understand that feeding or interacting with wild dingoes can contribute to habituation and put the animals themselves at risk.
🖤Share knowledge rather than fear, and look for practical ways to prevent conflict before it occurs.
When dingoes become habituated to people, the consequences can be devastating. We have seen how these situations can end, and we don’t want to see another local dingo lose its life because we failed to address the human behaviours contributing to the problem.
Coexistence isn’t about choosing dingoes over our community. It’s about helping our community understand how to live responsibly alongside them.
Prevention over punishment.
Education over fear.
Coexistence over conflict.
The future of our local dingoes depends not only on how we respond to them, but on the choices we make as a community.
Let’s learn to live alongside wildlife, not expect wildlife to live by our rules.
