Understorey Network

Understorey Network Promoting, preserving, protecting & rehabilitating native vegetation. We are available for plant sales each Monday between 9.30 am and 2.30 pm.

The Understorey Network started life as a volunteer organisation, with members growing native understorey plants to improve the biodiversity of revegetation sites. We have a native plant nursery at Tolosa Park, Glenorchy, at which volunteers grow around 25,000 native plants per year. We welcome volunteers who would be interested in learning to propagate native plants. Please call in or contact us by email at [email protected]

2026 – Your Year to Volunteer!
On Monday, in recognition of National Volunteer Week, we celebrated the unflagging support of our amazing volunteers with a get together over morning tea at the nursery. Our volunteers turn up rain, hail or shine to help out with a range of tasks in the nursery, the ‘office’ and the garden. We could not do what we do without them.

On Monday we also congratulated one of the USN’s founding members, long-time volunteer Els Wakefield, on her recent publication: “a life with the BIRDS OF TASMANIA”.

It is wonderful to know that our volunteers have such diverse interests but what brings them together is their passion for growing and protecting our Tassie native plants.

Stop the Rot: Phytophthora presentation
Last week the Understorey Network hosted a presentation on Phytophthora in native plant nurseries by Dr Matthew Laurence (Sydney Botanic Gardens PlantClinic) and Sarah Dunstan (). PlantClinic is a not-for-profit diagnostic laboratory with a plant conservation research focus.

Dieback caused by Phytophthora is a key threat to biodiversity. The production of disease free plants by native nurseries is integral to preventing introduction of this pathogen into the environment. Implementing nursery hygiene protocols is essential for prevention. In addition EcoPath Solutions, in collaboration with PlantClinic, has developed an innovative, cost-effective, and highly sensitive system to batch test plants, soil, and water for Phytophthora.

The session generated much valuable discussion. We look forward to the tool the team is developing based on the National Phytophthora Best Management Practice Guidelines that will make it easier for people to apply the recommendations in the field and in nurseries.

Many thanks to the presentation team for the opportunity to learn more about this important issue.

WETLANDS IN A SHEEP TROUGH
Nan Bray runs a sheep farm in the Southern Midlands. Ruth Mollison is helping Nan trial a method for keeping water troughs and dams clean of algae using wetland species propagated at the Understorey Network nursery. PhD student, Antje Werner, assisted with the design and installation of the floating wetlands.

Today the Understorey Network welcomed a wonderfully enthusiastic group of TasTAFE students studying Conservation and Ecosystem Management.
They moved through activities in native plant propagation, seed cleaning, and some truly hands-on nursery maintenance work. The way they worked together helped us make real progress in the nursery while they built new skills in growing Tasmanian native plants.
Their passion and teamwork were inspiring, and it’s clear they have so much to offer in the restoration and preservation of our natural environment.

CLOSED ON PUBLIC HOLIDAY, MONDAY 9 MARCH
The nursery will be closed on the public holiday, Eight Hours Day, on 9 March.
Another Monday public holiday means our volunteers have been working super hard on every other Monday. We’re so grateful for their efforts as early autumn is a busy time for propagation.

Pictured is one of our autumn flowering favourites – Leptospermum grandiflorum (common name: autumn teatree).

Normal Monday opening hours (9:30am – 2:30pm) resume on 16 March.

We had a fabulous sunny day for a field trip to Tasmanian Bushland Garden at Buckland yesterday. A very keen group of Understorey Network members and volunteers were welcomed to the garden by Wayne Goodwin, a volunteer with both TBG and USN.

Jane Southwell demonstrated plant identification methods with samples of plants from the garden and Ruth Mollison covered the basics of seed collection over morning tea. Ruth then led the group on a walk through the display gardens, showing everyone how to collect and label seed from a range of plants. There were plenty of opportunities to ask about the best ways to go about saving seed for future propagation. Seed was collected by participants to take home or to donate to the nursery.

We were also excited to catch a glimpse of white’s skink (Liopholis whitii) at the gardens.

Many thanks to the TBG for giving us access to the garden for this workshop and to Jane and Ruth for sharing their expertise.
