Understorey Network

Understorey Network Promoting, preserving, protecting & rehabilitating native vegetation. We are available for plant sales each Monday between 9.30 am and 2.30 pm.

The Understorey Network started life as a volunteer organisation, with members growing native understorey plants to improve the biodiversity of revegetation sites. We have a native plant nursery at Tolosa Park, Glenorchy, at which volunteers grow around 25,000 native plants per year. We welcome volunteers who would be interested in learning to propagate native plants. Please call in or contact us by email at [email protected]

GROWERS SCHEME REGISTRATION
The Understorey Network (USN) is excited to announce that our Growers Scheme (formerly Home Growers Scheme) will run from Spring 2026 (mid-October) through to Autumn 2027.
The Growers Scheme enables you to propagate Tasmanian native plants in your own backyard, school garden or any dedicated space where a group of enthusiasts can enjoy the experience of growing plants from native seed. You don’t need much space or elaborate infrastructure to take part.
You don’t need any special skills or equipment in fact we will provide you with all you need. All you need is sufficient space and time to sow and care for your plants. There will be ongoing support during the operation of the Scheme.

You will need to be a USN member to participate in the Growers Scheme. You can join us at the same time as submitting your registration of interest.
Registrations of interest are now open. Find out more about the Growers Scheme and register here: https://zfrmz.com.au/Msk51yFR4B4Dvdln8WgB
The number of participants is limited so the sooner you register the better.
REGISTRATIONS CLOSE on 9 September 2026.
USN looks forward to welcoming you as a participant and member.

Landcare Week is held each year in the first week of August, celebrating people who are actively restoring, enhancing and protecting the natural environment in their communities.
Our Understorey Network volunteers enjoy getting together each week to work towards these goals.

USN volunteers recently helped Bruny Island’s Cloudy Bay Restoration Landcare Group revegetate old pine plantation behind Cloudy Bay on Bruny Island into native forest, habitat for the critically endangered swift parrot. Recent rains and fine weather on the day made for ideal planting conditions.

Over the past 9 months the Understorey Network nursery volunteers have propagated and nurtured 2000 native plants for another project at Sorell Rivulet. A planting event is scheduled on Saturday 1 August where we’ll learn more about the role of riverbank revegetation in supporting waterway health. To join this event go to the Landcare Tasmania link to register your interest. https://www.landcaretas.org.au/sorell_rivulet_riparian_planting_event

We need your Tubes and Pots!!!!
As part of USN’s strong commitment to reuse/recycle principles we are putting out a call for forestry tubes and small, round pots.
Please note: we only need 2 sizes. See the photo for dimensions.

We would appreciate receiving your donations on Mondays (except public holidays) between 9.30am and 2.30pm.
Or, if it is easier, please bag your donations in something weather resistant and drop over the gate at the nursery. We are located inside Tolosa Park at Glenorchy. Come into the park and follow the circle road around to the top where you will see our sign on the gate. During winter the park is open 10:30am – 4pm (open at 9:30am on Mondays when our volunteers are at the nursery).
Thanks for contributing 😊

2026 – Your Year to Volunteer!
On Monday, in recognition of National Volunteer Week, we celebrated the unflagging support of our amazing volunteers with a get together over morning tea at the nursery. Our volunteers turn up rain, hail or shine to help out with a range of tasks in the nursery, the ‘office’ and the garden. We could not do what we do without them.

On Monday we also congratulated one of the USN’s founding members, long-time volunteer Els Wakefield, on her recent publication: “a life with the BIRDS OF TASMANIA”.

It is wonderful to know that our volunteers have such diverse interests but what brings them together is their passion for growing and protecting our Tassie native plants.
