Good afternoon our treasured supporter of SEE Education Scholarship Inc.
We sadly advise that after 10 years and having raised over $32,000 to fund further education courses for 15 young people from East African Mission Orphanage in Kenya, SEE will close its fundraising doors effective 30 June 2024. We will be ceasing incorporation by notifying the NSW Office of Fair Trading.

The Committee has had a lot of fun (in addition to putting in a lot of hard work) being with you at the annual fundraising events, we hope you have also enjoyed the evenings. If you are one of our interstate supporters or for various reasons have not been able to attend our events, we appreciate your generous donations. We are immensely grateful to all our supporters.

Special mention is made to the many event helpers who have freely given their time to manage the events seamlessly, and to donors of our silent auction and raffle prizes that aid enormously in SEE raising the funds that we have.
On a personal note, over the past 10 years we have had many people come and go on the SEE Committee and their contribution has been immeasurable.

Two people I can never thank sufficiently are Madelanne and Mohini who have shown a commitment to the SEE dream, above what I could ever have envisaged or hoped for.

We regularly receive emails of gratitude from EAMO’s founder, Ralph Spinks. The latest email was a sad one, received after we advised SEE would be stepping back from our regular fundraising. This email was written by Ralph who is currently recovering from a procedure to implant a Pacemaker/Defibrillator combo!

We have launched our cotton T-shirt “kindness is the answer” in Ecru or Plum.
The design includes the ‘SEE’ heart and stylised map of Kenya.

The cost is aud$35 each plus postage and handling.

Aud$10 from each shirt sold goes to East African Mission orphanage in Nakuru, Kenya to fund education scholarships for their teens.

What's Happening at EAMO
Dear Friends of EAMO

Warm greetings to all our EAMO donors and sponsors.

You have probably heard of the protests going on in Kenya every Monday by now. In which at EAMO have absolutely nothing to do with. We just want you all to know that we are all safe and sound.

All the EAMO kids are in school and most doing well. We have a handful of kids that really struggle with school, but that's to be expected when we have sooo many kids, all with stories of their future life before coming to EAMO.

The Kenyan School system has changed since returning after Covid.
Before, we had what was called the 8.4.4 system. Let me explain a little of the school system here.

It used to be this system:
8 years in primary,
4 years in high school (secondary)
4 years in University.

Now its: 2.6.3.3:
2 years Pre Primary,
6 years Primary
3 years Junior Secondary
3 years College/University

I guess the only difference is that if you didnt put your child through "pre primary" you can save 2 years!!! Anyway, this is the wisdom of the Kenyan authorities.
Unfortunately, most of this system is "academics, so the kids spend a lot of time in the classroom.
But the worst is the time they go to school each day and finish each day.
A typical day for a secondary school child is:

For day schoolers:
Time to be at school: 6:45am
Time to finish school: 6:30pm

For boarding schools:
Preps (studies) 4:00am
Begin School: 8:00am
Finish school: 5:00pm
Break/Dinner/Prayer
Preps (studies) 8:00 - 10:00pm
Bed: 10:30pm

That's how the school functions here. Interesting Hey

Unfortunately, due to the Covid period, we lost many donors/sponsors so our income has reduced dramatically. Which forced us to send all the eamo kids to outside schools, leaving the EAMO school like a ghost town. However, we have high hopes that we can build up our income soon and open up our EAMO school once again.

We have been abundantly blessed with not only being able to give our kids the formal education in the past, but for some, "further" education in the way of colleges and universities.

Further Education:

This is all thanks to certain sponsors/donors that were in a position to sponsor up to 7 children to go to Universities. So we have quite a few graduates.

Then there were others that received the opportunity to go to colleges.
"SEE" organisation in Australia that is made up of a group of women/friends, fund raise and have so far put 10 of our students successfully through various colleges studying different subjects.

Of course these kids are very thankful as it has given them a great start in life after EAMO. A special thank you to all the ladies in the "SEE" organisation. You are all doing a marvellous job in helping these children.

Seasons greetings from the Managing Director of the orphanage we support.

Dear Friends of EAMO

Warm greetings to all our EAMO donors and sponsors.

On behalf of ourselves, Management, staff and all the EAMO children, we would like to a say a huge thank you to you, the monthly sponsors, whom without we simply would not make ends meet.

Those of you that have sent us money to complete a certain project that we needed done or completed.

Those of you who have raised funds to sponsors kids in school, or college or University. (SEE’s primary contributions and goals).

Those of you that have been in a position to help us financially whenever we called for urgent help. (SEE contributed).

Those of you who have assisted me financially when I was hospitalised.(SEE contributed).

The sacrifice that all of you have made in sending your hard earned money to pay for whatever the request was for. It has enabled us to provide a home for the EAMO children. The food, the clothing, the bedding, the transport, the education, the social activities. Everything!

All the above has been accomplished for the past 25 years without any Government support whether local or abroad, just from your generosity.

I spoke to all the kids today, how much we need you. That none of us would be here without you. They were full of praise to you all. Honestly, we just cant thank you enough.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you again. EAMO family wishes you the best for the festive season.

I leave you with a few pics I took today of the kids doing what they love the most, keeping their own home neat and tidy and growing as much food as possible.

Interesting Fact:

EAMO, through your generosity of course, over the last 25 years has cooked/provided many meals for our Kenyan orphaned children. Calculating on averages, we have provided 2,956,500 good meals for our children!!

NAIROBI, KENYA
Dear Mandy Eagle and donors to “SEE”,
I want to thank you all for sponsoring me through university. I am honored to have received your support to be able to complete my degree. You have been a great help to me and I truly appreciate it.
University was not so bad. I went to a pretty good one, the lecturers there are very attentive to their students. It’s also a very organized school, that is students don’t end up losing their results which is often the case in the many large public universities in Kenya.
I began my academic year in May 2019, it’s a four-year degree course so I’m supposed to graduate at the end of this year. I experienced a minor setback during the onset of the corona virus lockdowns in the country back in 2021. At that time, it was the start of my third year but all educational institutions all over the country had been shut down. There was a period of transitioning from face-to-face learning to online platforms in order to continue with the academic work. My university is a private university, so the transitioning wasn’t too difficult for the school to arrange for all the students and only experienced a minor delay in setting it all up.
I lived in the school hostels at the time so that I could have easy access but since there was no longer any face-to-face classes, I couldn’t continue to stay there. Corona Virus was also spreading in the city, so I had to go to the countryside and stay there until everything died down and school was able to resume.
The place I went to stay at in countryside is situated in a very remote area, quite a distance away even from the nearest town. Internet over there is usually down most of the time so it was difficult to attend classes. As a result, at the end of the semester, I had no results for two units. These two units have been marked down as a retake so I will have to re-do them before the graduation otherwise I will not be able to graduate.
I understand that it is quite an inconvenience to you since you had put your faith in me and for that I sincerely apologize. I hope you will give me a chance to make up for those two missing units.
At the moment, I’m currently working on my research project and simultaneously looking for an attachment. They are requirements that I need to be able to graduate at the end of the year. The research is going well, we’re working together with our supervisors therefore it’s not difficult. As for the attachment, I am yet to find a suitable place but I’m still looking.
Once again, I am truly grateful.

Hello Mandy
I'm happy to hear from you again and I hope you are well.
Of course I don't mind telling you about my project.
My project is a research project. I’m pursuing a degree in International Relations and Diplomacy. My research title is: The Global War on Terror; Assessing The Impact of the US-NATO Withdrawal From Afghanistan. Basically, the research will be focusing on the recent withdrawal of the US and NATO troops from Afghanistan. How and why it all affects the global fight against terrorism and terrorist activities. It will also touch on the impact the withdrawal has had on regional security and diplomatic policies of the countries neighbouring Afghanistan. Currently, the proposal part of the research is already finished and I’m already working on the remaining chapters. The research is on a feedback basis which means we are working together with our lectures who can offer guidance and give corrections as well.
After my graduation I hope to able to continue in the field of diplomacy. While in University I found it very interesting so I would like to specialise in it if it will be possible. In line with that, I have actually applied for an attachment in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It will be the best opportunity to get first hand experience in the field of diplomacy and hopefully the first step towards achieving my goals so I'm praying with all my heart that I will get to do my attachment there.

25 Years of Success. Happy Birthday EAMO
Dear Friends of EAMO

Warm greetings to all our EAMO donors and sponsors.

April 17th 1997, wasn't just our daughters (Danielle) birthday, it was the day we arrived in Nairobi Kenya with basically 2 suitcases each, a little money in our pocket and absolutely no plan!

We caught a taxi to the YMCA in the city and then looked for a half decent car to buy. Found one, loaded the wife and kids and our 8 suitcases and headed up the Rift Valley.

It was dark when we arrived in a pretty town called Nakuru. I had been dodging potholes all the 2 hour drive, so I decided to check into a reasonable hotel.

A local couple we met there, convinced us that Nakuru was the best place in kenya to stay and also invited us to stay in their home! Things were falling into place already.

It was towards the end of 1997, after a little family meeting, we decided to help the huge number of kids sleeping in the street. May was given the task of starting off our first charitable program. We agreed we could foster one child. What did May do? she came home with two. Elijah and Njeri, brother and sister. Just to add here, for the past 25 years, May is still doing the same, bringing home more than we agreed upon. She would tell me she is going shopping today and actually come home with no groceries, but a car full of children!!

Anyway, its been 25 years since that day we took in Elijah and Njeri. We have seen our population of children rise from these 2 right up to 250 at one stage. Today, we are caring for 88 children only.
This is because, donors always come and go for whatever reason. The last two years of Covid has seen our monthly donations drop off considerably.

We celebrated the EAMO birthday on the 17th with the current children and some children that have left over the years that decided that join us on that day.

Without your regular donations we simply could not be where we are today. Thank you all ever sooooo much.

Wow! Who’d have thought we’d be still wrestling with COVID and my apologies for being so quiet about checking in to hope you’re all keeping well and to let you know about EAMO and SEE.

It’s been one month shy of 2 years since we’ve have our last SEE fundraiser but we are planning a return dinner at Monte’s as soon as lockdown is over!

There’s been a lot going on at SEE but here’s the story of Cynthia.

Story/Testimony

My name is Cynthia Atieno. I was born in Kisumu county in the year 2004. I had both parents who took good care of me. After two years, my sister was born. It was not long before my parents broke up. We were left under the care of our mum. Our lives changed as the days passed by. Since our mum could not bring us up alone, she tried to find help from her relatives. Even her closest relatives never cared about her life. She decided to move to another place after being sent away shamefully by her uncle. The place she moved to was Nakuru County. Here in Nakuru, she knew nobody. The only thing she did was to wander here and there. Throughout the night, we slept on big verandahs and thoughout the day we stayed under big trees. We survived on the little food that our mum bought daily with the little money she saved while in Kisumu. After a few months, our mum was arrested for simply being on the streets. My sister Lynnette Achieng and I were taken to a children's home called ARAP MOI. My sister was only 3 years old. After a few weeks, our mum was let free and was told to take us back to our real home. She had to do it. Back at home she once quarreled with her mother who later sent her away with all her belongings. She came back to Nakuru where she was again arrested. We, her children, were taken to another children's home, EAMO. It is owned by the Spinks Family who became our loving parents from the day we met them. They fed us, clothed us and put us in school. They have really helped us for a long time. They have been giving us more than our parents could have been providing for us. I do appreciate all that they have been doing for us. I am always happy with my life here at EAMO and am always thankful for the kindness they have towards us. Now we are big girls, my sister being in grade 7 and I being in High School. I am really proud having such wonderful parents.

Thanks to our wonderful SEE family; our friends who make monthly donations and others who sacrifice their birthday gifts to support SEE.

We are thrilled to advise that despite us not holding a fundraiser in 2020 we have still been able to contribute $1,900 towards Gloria’s final year at University, studying Bachelor of International Relations and diplomacy.

We paid for Gloria’s second year of study and now 2/3rds of her final year costs.

Who know where this will lead Gloria and the difference she could make to Kenya and globally.

Thankyou to all Friends of SEE and particularly those who have donated during these uncertain COVID times.
