Good morning members,

ANZAC Day is fast approaching, and preparations for our commemorations are well underway.

The Glen Innes RSL Sub‑Branch warmly invites all members to attend the scheduled ANZAC Services at our local schools and aged care facilities. These visits are an important part of our community engagement, ensuring that younger generations and our senior residents have the opportunity to reflect, remember, and honour the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

Please note that there is a crossover of commitments on Thursday, 24 April, and your support is essential to ensure all Services are properly attended. Your presence makes a meaningful difference, and we greatly appreciate your willingness to assist.

I would appreciate if you can RSVP your preference dates and time so we can plan these events.

I have memories of stories about both Grandfathers and my father who served. I should spend some time writing them down before they are lost.

My father’s father, John Patrick Joyce, Jack, arrived on Gallipoli on the first day and left on the last. He then went on to the Western Front where my other Grandfather who enlisted at 16 years old was a mile away on the front.

On leave in the north of England Jack was robbed and in a real corner in a cold land with no means to get anywhere. He travelled on a train to try and get back but he had no money for the ticket so would pretend to be drunk when the conductor came around. To be frank, the parochial religious division of the time was present in charity and his Catholicism was not helping him get help. The people who did take care of him was The Salvation Army.

Between the wars on a Royal Tour he was the RSM with oversight of the body guard for the Prince of Wales, Edward the VIII.

In the Second World War he fought the Japanese, having gone all the way through the ranks to at one stage being CRA, the boss in artillery, for his division.

The point I wish to convey is his immense respect he carried for the service of The Salvation Army. He appealed to us that they were worthy of support wherever they asked because that is what they gave when others couldn’t or wouldn’t during his service.

So why is Australia cutting funding to the service the Salvation Army gives to our armed services.

Both my grandfathers and father did not like people making a fuss, just stayed calm and got on with it, so maybe I am a little of a disappointment to them but I think they would expect me to raise this issue.

Let’s hope and pray that we don’t have any more wars but today the signs are not good. Let’s hope and pray that your sons and daughters that will fight them remain safe. If that terrible tragedy of war does come let’s make sure that the Salvation Army are nearby to hear them out when they are lonely or scared.
