The newest public art project sees acclaimed local artist Charlie Nivison create a new large-scale mural within the Town Hall Car Park, revitalising a prominent public space in the heart of Tamworth.
The project carries a unique and meaningful story of artistic legacy. The original mural, created by Charlieβs father, renowned artist Angus Nivison, stood proudly for 43 years and became an iconic feature of Tamworthβs cultural landscape. The creation of a new mural by Charlie Nivison represents a symbolic passing of the baton from father to son, honouring the history and significance of the original artwork while introducing a contemporary creative vision for the future.
As a member of the Tamworth Regional Council Public Art Committee, Arts North West is proud to advocate for investment in public art and the important role it plays in creating vibrant, connected and culturally rich regional communities.
The Town Hall Car Park Mural Renewal Project is a strong example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaboration between local government, artists and arts organisations and the wider community. It highlights the long-term value of investing in public art, supports the visibility and professional development of regional artists, and contributes to the creation of welcoming public spaces that residents and visitors can enjoy for decades to come.
Importantly, the project demonstrates that public art is more than decoration; it is an investment in community identity, local storytelling and cultural legacy. Through projects such as this, Arts North West continues to champion opportunities that celebrate local talent, preserve cultural heritage and strengthen the creative life of the region.
By honouring the legacy of Angus Nivison while supporting the next generation of artists through Charlie Nivisonβs work, the project reflects both the rich artistic history of Tamworth and the ongoing evolution of its cultural landscape.
