Self Help Addiction Resource Centre - SHARC

Self Help Addiction Resource Centre - SHARC Over 30 years of advocacy, housing and family support for people experiencing challenges with alcohol, drugs and gambling. We know - we've been there.

Self Help Addiction Resource Centre (SHARC), a not-for-profit, community-based organization, promotes self-help approaches to recovery from severe alcohol and other drug related issues. SHARC provides housing, education, advocacy and family support; working with families, individuals, and youth through a peer support model. The peer support approach is integral to our work, acknowledging that when

people come together to share about common problems, there also arises the sharing of solutions, and cuts through the sense of isolation and despair of feeling alone.

Overdose continues to have a devastating impact on people and families in our community – at SHARC, we know this all too well.

We welcome the government’s rollout of naloxone dispensing machines across Victoria. Naloxone is a free, life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose. Expanding access to naloxone through dispensing machines is a simple and effective measure that will save lives.

Twenty machines will be rolled out across the state over the coming months, including 10 machines in metropolitan Melbourne and 10 in regional and rural communities.

On Wednesday, SHARC CEO Clare Davies gave a keynote speech on the power of lived experience at AddictionZ conference.

Over time, peer work has evolved into a recognised discipline within the alcohol and other drugs sector. Peer support and lived experience are central to the work we do at SHARC. It a discipline built by a community and it is here to stay.

This week is Reconciliation Week. We'd love you to join SHARC in supporting Walking Together: Treaty and the Victorian AOD sector, a special event hosted by VAADA - The Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association today, online at 2:00pm.

This important conversation will explore Aboriginal self-determination and future directions for the Victorian alcohol and other drug sector. The webinar will also examine what an equitable and culturally safe treatment system for Aboriginal Victorians can look like.

We’re looking forward to hearing from the keynote speaker from Gellung Warl (First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria), alongside an incredible panel of Aboriginal leaders working across the sector.

This week is National Volunteer Week, and we sat down with some of our amazing volunteers to hear about their experiences on the Helpline.

SHARC’s Family Drug and Gambling Helpline is a free 24-hour service staffed by volunteers with lived and living experience of supporting someone through alcohol, drug addiction, or gambling-related harm. Our volunteers play a crucial role in providing understanding, hope and support to families, carers, and supporters who need it.

We’re always looking for new volunteers. If you’ve had a similar experience and would like to give back, you can get involved by filling out the form on our website: https://f.mtr.cool/mywaspivso

Thank you to all of our incredible volunteers - past, present and the ones we haven't met yet.

SHARC welcomes yesterday’s parliamentary support for cannabis cautioning reform in Victoria, following a motion introduced by Legalise Cannabis Victoria

Too many people are still being pulled into the justice system for low-level cannabis use when a caution would be a more appropriate response. Criminalising cannabis possession has only added harm and stigma, with marginalised groups disproportionately affected.

At its core, this is about protecting people. It’s about reducing unnecessary harm, treating people with dignity, and choosing health and support-based responses.

Families, carers and supporters play an important role in mental health and wellbeing.

SHARC is supporting an evaluation of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect Centres - services that provide free, peer-led support, information, and practical assistance for families, carers, and supporters of people facing mental health and/or substance use challenges.

If you’ve had experience with a Connect Centre, share your feedback in a paid focus group to help shape how these services support local communities.

Join us in the Grampians tomorrow!

SHARC will be visiting Ballarat (22 April) and Horsham (23 April) for a series of relaxed, welcoming events where we can connect, share, and listen. These gatherings are for people with lived experience of alcohol, drug use or gambling harm, as well as their family, friends, carers and supporters.

Across the two days, we’ll be running four sessions, each designed to create space for conversation and connection. We’ll also share about the work we do at SHARC and how we can support you.

Come along for a cuppa and a chat.

On Wednesday, the Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt joined SHARC, Tandem Carers and VMIAC - Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council to celebrate the collective advocacy behind the Entities Bill.

Together, we worked to ensure lived and living experience leadership is recognised, valued and protected within Victoria’s mental health and wellbeing system.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to write to their MP and speak up about the importance of lived and living experience leadership across the alcohol and other drugs and mental health sectors.

Pictured (from left) are Jane Dunne from Tandem, Minister Ingrid Stitt, Vrinda Edan from VMIAC, Joanna Tilkeridis from Tandem and SHARC's Clare Davies at Wednesday's celebration.
