🔥 A reminder that hazardous items don't belong in your bin! 🔥

A recent waste collection truck caught fire after hazardous materials were incorrectly placed in a bin. The load had to be dumped on the roadside, and the incident sparked a small bushfire.

We thank Queensland Fire and Emergency Services for their quick response in containing the fire 👏🚒

To help keep our waste crews, community and environment safe, please never place these items in your household or commercial bins:

❌ Batteries and power banks
❌ Gas bottles and cylinders
❌ Aerosols and pressurised containers
❌ Fuel, oils and chemicals
❌ Paint and solvents
❌ Flammable liquids
❌ Electronic waste
❌ Vapes
❌ Any items labelled hazardous or dangerous

✅ These items should be taken to an approved disposal facility or community collection service.

Gladstone Regional Council has called a special meeting on Thursday to determine the Deputy Mayor after a Notice of Motion from a Councillor.

There has long been an unwritten convention in Gladstone - the people choose the Deputy Mayor by way of majority vote in the councillor election. It was that same convention that gave me that opportunity not so many years ago.

Personally, I find this to be disappointing and it stands to nullify decades of tradition in the Gladstone Region whereby the will of the people may no longer be respected, and opens the door to councillors who could do back door deals to determine the Deputy position.

Natalia is someone who stands by her convictions. Whether you like her or not, whether you voted for her or not - the majority of people in our region did. That is democracy in action - that is the will of the people being upheld.

I was her biggest supporter when she achieved the same result I did prior to her; she deserves the same right to represent our community. Our community deserves to have their will respected by council.

I don’t profess to understand the reasoning behind this motion or why or how Councillors will vote. I am sure they have their reasons.

In my view, our community should never sell their right to determine who their Deputy Mayor is or seek to have that decision stripped away from them and put solely in the hands of Councillors or the CEO.

Formal objection to the people writing formal objections to Mandatory Garden Organics (GO) Bin Charge.

​Dear Mayor and Councillors,

​I am writing to register my strong objection to the objections from others about the organic green waste bins.

Less than $2 a week seems like an entirely reasonable price to pay for a service that many other local government areas have had for many years.

I am personally looking forward to not having to do as many tip runs in the year.

PS - Please hurry up and complete the Boyne Tannum Aquatic Centre.

You might have seen this going around - unfortunately my comment was blocked so here’s my views.

Respectfully, this is a ridiculous idea. All it will do is reduce access for residents to representation. There are 9 councillors to serve 65,000 people.

The annual GRC budget is $300 million give or take depending on the year. Reducing one councillor will reduce approx $100,000 a year in councillor wages. It will make bu**er all difference to the cost to rate payers. Less than 0.05% of the annual budget.

It will make a massive difference to residents when they want to try and get a hold of councillors to attend their community event or come to their part of the region to look at a specific issue etc. to catch up with farmers to look at their rural roads, to speak with residents about disaster recovery efforts or talk with local community groups about projects to enhance their communities.
