From first knots to full-scale builds — pioneering is one of the many skills that grows with young people throughout Scouts.

Joey Scouts begin by learning simple knots and teamwork
Cub Scouts take on bigger projects and creative builds
Scouts develop confidence constructing larger pioneering structures
Venturer Scouts lead ambitious projects using advanced skills and planning
Rover Scouts put their experience into action mentoring others and tackling complex challenges

Last weekend our Joeys enjoyed a two-night District Camp at Camp Warringal, Whittlesea. They tried archery, campfire singing, cooking damper over a fire, science experiments, games, and bush golf.

It was a great opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills, meet new friends from across Victoria, and embrace the adventure together!

Huge congratulations to Hudson, who completed his Adventurous Journey at Hanging Rock. He kicked things off with a history lesson before leading the Cubs on a creek‑walk rubbish clean‑up and a hike to the summit. We couldn’t have asked for better weather — or better company. There were a few “inclusive rest breaks” along the way… mostly for the adults who needed to catch their breath! Hudson is well on his way to earning his Grey Wolf peak award, well done!

This weekend the 1st Gisborne Scouts enjoyed a 2 night camp at Rowallan Scout Camp. There, they participated in archery, low ropes and an initiative course (where they worked as a team) For dinner they cooked themselves camp oven stew and peach cobbler for desert. In the evening they enjoyed sitting round the campfire that they lit themselves! The rain came in overnight, but as Scouts know, that’s all part of the adventure!

Our adventurous Joey's turned into real explorers this week! With nets and containers at the ready, our Joeys waded into the creek to search beneath rocks and through the reeds for water bugs. They were excited to discover plenty of snails and even more thrilled when they spotted some mayfly nymphs and mosquito fish!

Joeys meet every Wednesday between 5:45-6:45pm.

Today our Scouts were proud to take part in the local ANZAC Day march. They marched with respect and represented our group with great pride, honouring those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Earlier in the day, a group of our Venturers worked together with other Venturers and Rovers from the Macedon Ranges District Units to cook and serve food and hot drinks to all those who attended the Dawn Service at the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross, showing a strong example of collaborative community service.

Over the school holidays, one of our Venturers, Angus, completed his Adventurous Journey. Together with Ben and Eli from 1st Gisborne and Russell, Clancy and Alex from 1st Riddells Creek Scout Group , Angus led a hike around the Southern Circuit of Wilson’s Prom. Some of the highlights were a side quest to the South Point of mainland Australia and seeing bioluminescent plankton.

A Venturer Adventurous Journey involves the complete planning, documentation and leading of the 4 day hike, with only guidance in the planning and remote check-in monitoring provided by leaders.
Well done Angus on this major achievement in your scouting journey!

A big accomplishment by Julia Stockdale, who has achieved her peak award in Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and now Venturers. She has always been highly motivated and a big contributor to the group, including being a youth helper in the Joey section.

Julia reflected on pushing herself outside her comfort zone, both during physical activities to achieve her OAS progressions and in taking on larger leadership roles. Julia joins her siblings, Thomas, Renee and Alison on our group's honor board. Congratulations on being awarded your King' Scout award!

At the end of Term 1, Scouts from 1st Gisborne, along with their leaders, completed an overnight hike through the Lerderderg State Forest.

After trekking 12 km across undulating terrain, they arrived in Blackwood tired and hungry. There, they set up their tents and cooked dinner on camp stoves, carrying all their food and gear themselves.

The following day, they hiked back out of Blackwood, reaching their final destination and returning to their parents for a well-earned rest.

In total, the Scouts covered 16 km, further developing their Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) and building valuable experience along the way.
