This week is Loneliness Awareness Week (3-9 August) ⭐

This year’s theme, Make Room for Connection, celebrates the everyday ways people living in Australia are making room for connection and shines a spotlight on those who are, or want to be, connectors in their communities, workplaces, schools and neighbourhoods.

Each week, as we open our doors to the community, we're reminded of just how valuable connection is. Whether you're a student who has been learning with us term after term for years, someone who has recently started classes, we are so happy to have you with us! If you are looking to join our programs but aren't sure where to start, we've got just the event for you! 🥳

On Thursday 20th August from 10am we will be running a FREE Permaculture Workshop and Community Lunch to celebrate National Science Week - this is the perfect opportunity to learn something new, sharing a meal with likeminded people and to get a feel for MRFEC if you're new to us. 🌿

RSVPS are required for catering purposes, and bookings can be made on our website or by giving our team a call on 03 5428 3799.

If that's not for you, we also offer pro-rated rates for all of our courses with places available if you want to join after the term has commenced. We also have free trials for our movement and exercise classes, as well as our Art and Drawing and Calligraphy classes!

For more information and online enrolment, visit www.mrfec.net.au

🌿 Celebrate National Science Week (15–23 August) with us on Thursday 20 August!

This year’s theme, “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All,” encourages communities to explore how ideas take root, grow and spread 🥳

To mark the occasion, we’re offering a free Permaculture Workshop led by our wonderful tutor and local, Emily Rogers. Participants will discover the principles of permaculture and learn practical ways to apply them in their gardens and everyday lives. The workshop will run from 10:00am to 12:30pm, followed by a free community lunch! While this is a FREE event, RSVPs are still very much encouraged for catering purposes. 😁

Not a gardening enthusiast? No problem! We offer a wide range of courses, workshops and events throughout the term. From monthly Bingo and Calligraphy to Xero and much more, there’s something for everyone. We're also looking for new house members - speak to our team for more information! 👏

For more information on any of the above, call us on 5428 3799, pop in to say hello at 12 Hamilton Street or hop on to our website to enrol online at www.mrfec.net.au.

The Australian Government will test the new AusAlert national warning system, at 2 pm on Monday 27 July 2026 AEST.

AusAlert uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile phones during local and national emergencies.

Mobile devices across Australia should receive the test alert before the system launches in October.

During the test:
✅ a message will appear on your screen
✅ your device may vibrate and play a loud siren-like sound for about 10 seconds
✅ you do not need to do anything if you receive the test alert.

The system is also being tested with assistive technology, such as hearing aids, screen readers and Braille displays.

If the alert could disrupt you or make you or someone you support feel unsafe, you can turn your device off or switch it to aeroplane mode before the test time.

To learn more about AusAlert and access resources, see the comments below. 👇

SIGN THE PETITION TO KEEP OUR DOORS OPEN

https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/get-involved/petitions/neighbourhood-houses-funding/

Years of underfunding mean too many Houses are operating with limited staff and stretched resources — despite growing demand and a rise in complex safety issues, including mental health crises and instances of violence. Houses are being forced to cut open hours, reduce programs, or fundraise just to turn on the lights.

Unless government acts, more doors will close — and communities will lose trusted, safe and inclusive spaces they rely on every day.

This petition urgently calls for the Victorian Government to:
💙Restore funding in real terms for Neighbourhood Houses through a 25% increase
💛Fund the 25 Neighbourhood Houses that do not currently receive any ongoing funding
💗Develop a fund for the establishment of 20 additional Neighbourhood Houses in growth areas

With Term 3 commencing next week, we wanted to reflect on what a wonderful first half of 2026 we've had already (and to post the photos that may have slipped through the cracks of our social media! 😆)

In Term 1 MRFEC ran it's first ever Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, and what a turnout we had! With some familiar faces popping in to buy a sausage, our wonderful staff and volunteers had a day full of laughs, snags and we walked away having raised over $2000 that went straight into MRFEC! 👏

Throughout Terms 1 and 2, we also celebrated International Women's Day and Reconciliation Week with free morning and afternoon teas. We welcomed the community to a Free Community Lunch for Neighbourhood House Week, bringing people together to connect and celebrate our community. 😁

Our much-loved monthly bingo group has returned for another year of games, fun, and laughter, while our Social Craft Group has continued to grow and become a real cornerstone of our centre.💐

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful organisations and community groups that have been involved in these events. We are so grateful to work alongside such supportive partners in our community.

Our new pottery wheels, pottery shed, and community room tables, generously funded by Community Bank Gisborne & District have quickly become a beloved feature of our centre. We sincerely thank the bank for its ongoing support and commitment to our community.

It has already been a fantastic year for MRFEC, and we can't wait to see what's still in store. Want to join in on the fun? Enrolments for Term 3 are now open!

Whether you're looking for your new favourite hobby, exercise class, social group or looking to upskill and progress your career, we have something for everyone - kids included!

New courses this term include: Art & Drawing, Beginners Photography, Gentle Movement, Digital Devices – The Basics, and Office Ready Skills with AI. We also have some new workshops, including Create Your Own Paperback Book, Eco Dyeing, and iPhone Photography. We also have Kids Art Club & Kids Yoga returning!

For more information on any of the above, call us on 5428 3799, pop in to say hello at 12 Hamilton Street or hop on to our website to enrol online at www.mrfec.net.au. We look forward to seeing you soon! 🥳
